Smells from my childhood..baking bread, fresh plowed ground, fresh cut grass, the mixture of oils, fluids, gas etc emanating from my Dad's clothing. He was a mechanic.

I see a lot of variations of evergreens, pine trees, christmas trees, but I have to say Digger pine bark and needles on a warm afternoon.

Fresh baked bread

Yep, many evergreens have a lovely smell, but have y'all noticed that freshly baked bread and sizzling bacon have turned up in several lists?

I forgot lilac and wisteria and garlicky shrimp.

The smell of an old tobacco barn when its curing and the smell of a wood burning stove!!

Some smells are seasonal if I think of the outdoors... Fresh-cut summer grass with a hint of chives wafting on a whisper of wind along about sundown; dried, withered Autumn leaves and decaying orchard apples hidden in the tall grass under bare tree branches; chimney smoke on a cold winter's night; rich, black soil turned over and ready for Spring planting.

So many more...

My wife, a new-born baby, old steam locomotives, a bluegrass festival campfire, my banjo, the beach, Grandma's cooking, antique furniture, dilapidated barns, and the list goes on...

Lilac for me as well- especially when the smell is coming in an open window.

The smell of the ocean - especially when it's not in sight yet.

The smell of bread just out of the oven - especially when it's wicked cold outside.

The smell of the small white blossoms of a wild shrub that grows around the shores of lakes and ponds here - I think it may be highbush blueberry because I often see berries like look and taste like blueberries on them later in the summer. Anyway - it grows in such proliferation around here that the lakes become fragrant - which makes canoeing on them all that much more pleasant.

I have no sense of smell. Thus, I also have a bad sense of taste. When I'm told that something smells, whether good or bad, I just say "It smells like roses to me!" Always look to the bright side... !

When we drove by a fresh roadkill skunk Gramp would take a deep breath and say "I don't know why people say that's a bad smell...I wouldn't mind putting that skunk in the trunk and riding around with it for a while. The girls wouldn't like it,though".

I like the smell when there is still a few inches of snow on the ground on an 80 degree day having snow melt and evaporating off a hot sidewalk.

freshly cut lumber
freshly washed baby's hair
race car exhaust
diesel tractor exhaust
the tire store (new rubber)
new fiberglass boat
campfire
canvas tent
new car upholstery
newly painted room
tobacco curing in the barn

I didn't list the food smells, as this would really take awhile. Have you noticed that many lists include things that remind us of our childhood, and of times and people that made us happy? I don't think that's a coincidence.

My dad was a woodworker, and had a love of cigars -- he'd usually smoke a cigar while he was in his shop. I really don't like the smell of cigar smoke, but, to this day, the mixture of cigar smoke and sawdust brings back fond memories.

Dan,

My grandfather was the same way except he smoked a pipe more than his cigars. The two smells (Smoke and sawdust) combined bring back very fond memeories for me also. The other smell that reminds me of him is cutting formica countertops. There is nothing else that smells like that and I installed many kitchens with him so that smell in very reminisent of him.

My other grandfather was a lobsterman. All the smells Steve Davis keeps mentioning remind me of grampy Morrison.

What a great forum!

I have noticed a number of posts about the smell of curing tobacco in a barn. Growing up in Maine, I have no idea what that smells like. Alwives smoking in a barn, now thats a different story ( and much different smell I'm sure). Steve Davis knows that smell!!

I have to agree with that. I've got one in my Lee Co., FL back yard here.

I also love the smells of:
Coffee
Cinnamon in the stores at Christmas

And oddly race tracks for the smells of burnt tires, fuel, concession stand foods and etc. That is a favorite because of some great childhood memories.
