Okay. Guilty of watching the Science Ch. again. They were doing experiments with odors and how people reacted to the different smells.
I thought about that. Interesting.

"White Rain" brand hairspray brings back happy memories. The Late Great Irene was allergic to many other brands, so that's what she'd put on, before we went to any dress-up places. Then she'd put on her coat, with the fake fur collar. I kept the coat, and sometimes I'll just sniff the collar, and remember.

Peach brandy, for some reason it makes me think of my childhood. I don't drink alcoholic beverages now, but when I did I loved the smell of it, though I preferred Jack for drinkin'.

Anyone else remember those old purple mimeograph copies? We used to have them when I was in grade school. The teacher would hand out copies and immediately every kid in the room would press their nose right up to the paper for that brief but glorious whiff of whatever cancerous aromatic compound was in it.

This is a Blog from my Homepage, that I put up some time ago.
There are many smells from my past that I recall with fondness. Some of them may be considered ‘off beat’ or odd. There are some sounds as well. Many times in the past, I have gone rabbit hunting on a frosty morning. A ‘grass sort of crunches under your feet’ morning. I mean the kind of morning when, if you breathed in through your nose, the air was cold enough that you could ‘feel’ it at the ‘rim’ of your nostrils. On days like that, the smell just after firing my shotgun was really pleasant. For several years I raised a garden every summer. On a hot day, the scent of dirt in the air, just after I had run the tiller between the rows of potatoes, to loosen dirt so I could ‘hill’ it up on my potatoes, is something I could never get enough of. I always liked the smell of a tomato plant. My favorite days are the ones when the sky is a solid leaden overcast and there is a hard drizzle falling. The smell of rain in the air on those days is much better than perfume! One of the 'perks' of working leather is the smell of the stuff. I like the smell that is produced by striking steel against flint, when I start a fire with flint and steel. The scent that only lives inside the cab of an old, OLD truck. The smell of Black Powder being fired. Bacon frying...and bread baking. The smell of my Wife's hair. These all take me back to ‘better days.’ I was younger, healthy and strong. There is one sound that can never be mistaken for another. The sound of an anvil ringing when hot steel is being forged on it. Another memory from better days. I have always loved the sound of a hard hit line drive coming off a genuine WOOD bat. The proverbial ‘crack of the bat.’ The muted ‘tink’ sound made by a ‘Tin Bat’ is an abomination! I love the creaking sound a saddle makes. The noise made by a brook flowing over rocks can do more good than prescription tranquilizers! Spend an afternoon beside a babbling brook and see if you can come away in a bad mood. I love the sound made by a big Harley Motorcycle. Music to my ears. Many high end Banjos will, right after a string change, have a pronounced ring AND a hum. It is always there, to a degree, but it is more noticeable right after you put on a new set of strings. Wind chimes. A Military Drum Corps. No other instruments, just the drums. The sound of a cat purring. The far off sound of a Piston Driven Bi-Plane purring. The report of a big bore handgun, when it wanders through the hills. Idle thoughts and pleasant memories.
Regards,
Jeeter

Home made bread , "to me" is the best smell in the world.
Although rather odd, the smell of skunk reminds me of being a kid, either washing my dog with tomato juice or the countless hours I spent in the woods trapping and catching ( by accident) the occasional skunk. I can't say I "like" the smell, but it brings back very fond memories.

I LOVE the scent of my son (most of the time). At eight, he still has a sweet little boy smell. Fallen leaves in the autum. I love the smell of the ocean when you get away from land and I love when you can first smell the land coming when returning from a blue water cruise. Coming home to the smell of dinner cooking after a long day at work. Almost any smell when riding a motorcycle. They're so intense it just makes me feel more alive. I remember following a truck carrying garlic in southern California. The smell was almost overwhelming, but I slowed down so I could follow it until he got off the highway. A good single malt Scotch or a fine red wine in the glass. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

I just have to relate this poem we were all forced to memorize when I was in 4th grade (about 1985/86). Stuck with me all these years...FINALLY it's come in handy.
SMELLS by Christopher Morley
Why is it that the poets tell so little of the sense of smell, these are odors I love well The fragrance of a fumey pipe, the smell of apples newly ripe and printers ink on leaden type The woods by moonlight in September breath most sweet and I remember ever a burning campfire ember Camphor, turpentine and tea the balsam of a Christmas tree, these are whiffs of memory A ship smells best of all to me

Fresh baked bread, grape wine fermenting. Slightly damp Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Shotgun powder smoke, autumn in the forests. Fresh cut red cedar and freshly tilled earth. My partner's cologne which she won't use often enough for me.
Big city stink makes me claustrophobic. Seems to get worse every time I visit my kids. Hate to see the mountains disappear in a brown haze which smells far worse than autumn cranberries rotting in the forest after a frost. Dog peee- yeuuuw could kill us all with the windows rolled up.
We do not know where we are going. Nor do most of us care. For us, it is enough that we are on our way. Le Matelot

The next year after my father passed, I began working at Shillito's, the largest department store in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the time. I was Santa Claus. At first I did it to kinda keep my mind off of dad, but when I'd see the smiles (and some looks of terror) on those kids, and old people, it took on a whole new meaning to Christmas to me. I got down on the floor and played with the kids, had them reciting their ABC's, what they loved was when they found out I didn't have a pillow in there. We used to have school classes, thirty or more kids, at a time, and we'd get pictures of all of us at once. Later I went to a different store, where I had a little boy that flew in from Dallas, Texas, every year. His mother used to send me updates and I'd be able to ask him questions, and tell him things that had happened to him throughout the year. It sure blew his mind. It is a greatmemory, all because of my father.
