I´m shortly going to set up a new chart - a little like my one-page chord chart for 5th tuned 4-stringers:

acoustudio.dk/TENOR%20BANJO%20CHORDS.htm

The new chart will focuse on chord settings using the thumb also - partly with added colorations, small scales within a chord etc., which will be possible due to the "extra" finger.

However I may have a problem - LOL!

I know, that US citiziens are naming their fingers T-1-2-3-4 (on both hands).

In an all metric country like Denmark we name them 1-2-3-4-5 (on left hand plus 6-7-8-9-10 on right hand - starting with the thumbs).

All non-US players,

How do you name/count fingers in your countries? LOL!

Regards

Polle

PS!

I forgot to mention, that I in the new chart will point out which finger will have to go where. LOL!

An example - many tenor players have a problem forming a Dim-chord with their maybe fat 4 fingers - especially at the uppper end of the fretboard (Up means near the pot - aggree?).

Let the example be a Bbo in basic position - the chord setting will be 10-9-11-10 (fret number for 4th to 1st string) - a standard finger setting (in non-Danish terms) for this will be 2-1-4-3.

In the new chart the finger setting will be T-1-3-2 - try it - and once you master the grip, try letting your pinky make a roll on 1st string from 12th down to 10th fret, while holding the grip and playing a steady rhythm.

Oh - do you maybe now get my point about a relaxed grip plus a possibility for adding f.ex. an inside scale? Only by using your otherwise lazy thumb! LOL!

Polle:

Using the thumb to fret strings it total heresy (grin) But we've been there before ;-)

Thanks,
Mark

One heresy more, or less - I do not care. In my heretical DGdg tuning I fret the root of my F chord (3532) by thumb too: youtube.com/watch?v=O14LbX83gU8

P.S. I do not know about the official way of counting left hand fingers (among classical guitar players), the right hand are named p,i,m,a. I think we just adopted the US system of T1234.

Django didn't have much to work with after his train accident ! I'd give him a pass on that :))

Mark,

Believe it or not - but some BHO members plus many domestic players have asked me about this fantastic and extremely usable playing style.

That´s why I´ll put up a "chart" for it - only I had to know how to number the fingers used - for most people on a global basis to understand.

I think, that I´ll go for the idiotic T-1-2-3-4 numbering - otherwise I forsee a WW III coming closer. LOL!

Roman Emperors did for sure use their thumb with great effect.

Chuck Norris used his thumb unwisely in the Coliseum, in Way Of The Dragon

The words "train" and "caravan" are not synonymous for me. (At the age of 18, Reinhardt was injured in a fire that ravaged the caravan he shared with Florine "Bella" Mayer, his first wife. - says Wikipedia)

Mirek,
OK...I stand corrected. Just saying what I had heard from a banjo instructor and real jazz historian back in the '70's. The point remains the same, however. Django didn't have much of a choice on how to fret strings since he lost fingers in the accident.... A distinction without a difference in my mind.

Thanks,
Mark
