I'm going to chime in, althou few seldom answer me here, and i am one of the new members. I also run a forum. We do not allow flaming. Period. We don't tolerate folks dishonoring wimmen. But we do have a place we allow older members to duuke it out if they simply cannot get past the testosterone rush :)

When I spoke with a few folks around Dallas about BHO, it had a rep of being a rude and snobbish place. Thas fine, but it was someone's opine, and I decided to give it a try here and see for myself. What i took away from that experience is that this place seems a lot like an old country town, and once you show up, fine, but it takes some time for any one to see you, much less talk to you.

I been on my ranch for some time now, and only this year have the other ranchers come around, offer help, etc. Thas fine, but sometimes folks, that "waiting" thing will give a forum a bad name.

And any one that deploys the "GAFY" as the kind lady(barbbanjo, I believe) above spoke to should have simply been suspended/banned until they found some manners to show to a lady. We are not supposed to be the rude ones, folks. We are supposed to be the good ones. Thas why i came back to bluegrass - I wanted genuine, pure and honest again.

Any how - my two cents - Flame away

I just checked and there are 78 active topics right now. Of these there are 2 (including this one) talking about
all the locked threads and snotty people here on the Hangout.
There are no other threads at this time that are causing any problems or have insulting behavior connected to them yet we continue to talk about "all the locked threads" and nastiness going on.
In the last few days we have locked out at least 3 people that I know of, and yes I locked a couple of topics and there were a couple deleted.
But right NOW there are 78 good, informative, and nice threads going on that this topic ignores.

We seem to go in phases. As a moderator there are days I'm very busy then it goes for days where there is nothing for me to do. Play nice, and Eric will be able to retire all of us from duty.

Wow. I learned a new acronym from this thread! And it is one that I have to remember because I am not allowed to use it!!!

Hey- pretty much everybody here is a decent sort. there are a few who get naughty at times, but I haven't seen the most rascally one here... so what I am saying is that we just need to tug up our big kid pants, put on our best smile and go out into the big ol world as ambassadors of oursleves, our music, and as representatives of our raising.... If we bring discredit to the BHO and ourselves, we are also doing that to our music, our families, etc..... let's all act in an appropriate manner, and not have to be concerned about how we look to folks all around the world...

I don't see Snotty here on the off topic here very often. "They" say we should have a sarcastic font Because when you read something you can't really tell if somebody's just yanking your chain.

I like to think we're just a bunch of folks standing around in a circle trading licks.I like to razz people & I'm really easy to cut up too!.

Those snotty people only come to off topic to complain!.

How about Comic Sams MS in purple, SIZE 1, for sarcastic?
That way, people who wish to avoid sarcastic comments, can skip over them. And the people who like it, will have to work at squinting at the tiny type.

Bitbender, I am a former (well still am even though I don't live there now) Texan, and most of us just want to make sure you are not moving in to the community to alter it. Once they found out that you are just a rancher like them and not putting up condos, and complaining about cows doing there business, things will be just fine.

I think that many people can be less than polite - or even downright impolite without even realizing it.

I'm sure Chaosfrailer meant no offense by it - but his statement "I'm from the south, so I know when to run my mouth and when to shut it" carries the unspoken implication that he believes people that do not come from the south do NOT know when to run their mouths or when to shut them.

Besides being impolite - his statement is demonstrably incorrect. We all know the worst offenders are ALWAYS from the south

Chaosfrailer - welcome to the BHO - hope you enjoyed your virtual teeth kicking

Huh. I read through this thread and it's a mystery to me -- I don't wanna get all Disney and start blowin' sunshine up everyone's-- I mean to say I don't wanna be too syrupy here, but I've never been on a forum with as many folks willing to help as the BHO. I'm positive the same annoying questions get asked by newbies over and over again (yes, I'm sure I've done it), yet it's seemed to me that people are awful nice about it. But I suppose I do detect a little snootiness -- as opposed to snottiness -- from time to time.

I'll tell you what, though, I'm a writer who's been around a lot of artists and whether you like the term or not, if you're a hardcore banjo player, you're an artist -- my experience tells me that if you can find me a "snot-free" forum full of artists, I'm liable to find you a naked picture of Bob Hope doing a cha-cha with a dead poodle on a Saharan golf green.

My point was not that I was offended by Chaosfrailer's remarks - but that I thought he was being offensive without even realizing it. And I used his post as an example of how things written here that many view as innocent remarks can easily spark flame wars.

As for your advice here - it's all well and good but maybe you should try following it more often yourself. As I recall, you didn't hesitate much before you jumped into Sam's thread about vulnerability and help morph it into a religious debate.

Personally - I don't care. When I see people being snotty and rude I'll just give right it back to them.

"Confrontational" is OK with me.

How's that for snotty, rude and confrontational?

BConk,

You're being a rascal! I too, am not at all perplexed by going toe to toe with any of the folks- but it is not always as nice a thing as it could be! I am working on being more skilled at social stuff, and less at defending myself or my positions. I am generally successful at that without trying too hard! And this is the place for me to catch up with like-minded individuals. (Now lets see just how well I can hold to that!)

I wish each person here a very joyful Saturday. I hope you are a couple steps closer to your dreams and a few steps farther from your grievances. I hope you learn to play the banjo better than I, and that you show me a thing or two along he way. God Bless, take care.

There are many folk tales, in many languages, about problems caused by sincere people observing the same phenomenon from different perspectives, and having severe, sometimes fatal, confrontations over which perspective is right, and which is wrong.

Fortunately, I have the option of logging in to the Hangout, where I can get comments from people whose perspective is the only one worth considering, bless their hearts!

renopicker - Posted - 11/07/2009:  19:11:18

As one of the people guilty of snottiness I would say I was just upset about a banjo parts issue, and I went off topic on my own topic, threw in some personal attacks here and there, and a dash of salt...

But the hangout has made me very aware of the errors of my recipe...

And I appreciate it, I was out of line...

It is a little bit funny, as well...

Oh well, it is Saturday night and time to go out and have fun with less worries this week than last week!

I will survive... if anyone is worried about me...

RP

Edit: And I think the best way to eliminate this behavior is to let people know right away they are breaking this rule or that rule, and be specific...and offer a solution to them as well...

IE: With all respect sir your statement to Go F yourself, is a violation of the rules and please go back to your original post and select the pencil ICON above the post and delete that for others who read(this post/thread) in the future, I would very much appreciate it... sir...

Excuse me......maybe it's just me....but I think we really could live without the above "IE" !

The BHO is a family site and I really don't think that the site owner would approve of this.

If you accepted PM's (but you don't...you have that feature turned off), I would have written this privately.

Mods.....I hope you feel the same and delete my quote as well as the original post above.
