Is there some weird virus going around that is making people more prickly and downright rude on the threads these days? The full moon? Halloween? The dark days of post day-light savings time? Lots of locked threads and snottiness. Or maybe it's just my brain that's locked and snotty.

I still think "Life is a Joke, Drop Dead is the Punch Line!"
But, yes, even a basically happy fellow such as myself is feeling more pompous, self-righteous, confrontational than usual. With an inexplicable feeling of general unfocused anger.
Be glad you're not having to deal with any of my PRIVATE messages.
The car starts, the house don't leak, the banjo stays close enough to proper tune, the bills are covered, there's a slight excess of groceries (and if there wasn't, I could probably last a week on plain water and my natural reserves of fat).
So what the Age Gee Dub A Lull is my problem?
I blame the Readers' Digest!
Many years ago, some guy with terminal cancer wrote an article about it. In early autumn. The autumn of the year, and the unexpectedly early autumn of his life. It was a VERY well-written article, and the Digest people re-printed it in their mag.
It was a late autumn issue of the Digest, and it ended with this unforgettable phrase
"....the darkness comes a little sooner, every day."
Maybe I don't like being reminded that the Late great Irene sure missed out on some interesting stuff, by simply being too dead to physically be there; and, in like manner, I shall certainly miss out on some interesting stuff also.
Anyway, all y'all go get the songs off my Music files, and add 'em to your reppa-twa. That way, there's a possibility that something from my heart, will be bringing a bit of happiness to a jam, long after my moustache has uncurled for the last time.

I feel/see/read it too. Like it's it bleeding over from comments from news websites. A lot of members from many different kinds of forums are b****ing and attacking anything without thinking before they hit the submit button. We're all good people, but venting personal views on blogs/e-mails/forums kinda makes me ill and non-trusting. If you have nothing nice to say, keep it to yourself, or go hit some golf balls. IMHO. Whoops, was that a rant? Sorry if I offended anyone.

I've been following ligit interesting threads until someone has to go and make an insulting comment and ruin it for not only the poster but everyone who can maturally particpate without spinning it into an inappropriate direction. If people aren't interested in the topic, they should just mind their own business and not ruin it for everyone. Its really disappointing.

Yep, I have made the same observation - must be something external to the Hangout that is causing folks to be unusually fussy...
I sure hope it gets resolved before too long...lots of good people gettin' their feelings hurt and personal attacks seem to know no bounds...disappointing, to say the least. If this continues, I expect to see readership and membership begin to decline as with other listservs, etc...Perhaps it is just the natural life expectancy of a virtual environment...

Michael--I used to dread Novembers in this little household because my wife had this atavistic need to hunt and gather before it was too late. We HAD to go get our meat (deer and elk). We HADt o get the garden harvested and the bounty processed. We HAD to go get our firewood. She would be antsy and peckish. She's calmed down some over the years. Now we heat with a gas stove and buy turkey and chicken in small quantities. But she still mumbles about the dying of the light every day.

Hmmmm...More members?
But really I do have a theory.
Here it is. There seems to have been a loosening of the rules. Example There was a time you couldn't write the S-word, even if it were Xed out, now it's okay. The relaxing of the rules allows for more BS that has to really go over the top to get locked and the hard noses are not locked out...This sets a bad example for the new members and old member and they act in the same because they think is okay...Which I guess it is now.
I may be 100% wrong but that how I see it.

Or to put it another way. People around town do seem to be getting more snarly and 'in your face'.

Emotions can run high on a subject that has meaning to the person. That I can understand. However, rude/crude/snooty remarks on a thread that is a nonsense kind of thread does nothing but put people off. I try to practice "Do unto others" but I have digressed a few times. But when the subject matter is light and fun or silly, it's fun to fall into that line of respone. It's just too bad when someone enters that thread and kills it with a rude comment that just needed to be kept to themselves.

The BHO has always been this way to some extent, the rudeness ebbs and flow. Banjo-L was the same way before it. That's why I periodically take breaks from the forums; I hang around until the stench gets too offensive, and then leave for a while and come back a few months later.

I don't think its just the hangout, time of year, etc. I think we see it everywhere there is NO repsect for someone with an opion that is different than the one you hold. I wil disagree that you can blame it on the ecomony or aything else. Somewhere along the line a lot of people have decided that manners just don't matter anymore. You can see it about anyplace you go. Some of the ones doing it, I know they were raised better than that.

Yeah, but you know, when it comes to the problems of the heart, this place is full of folks who give very large, warm hugs. Cause we've been there and had it done to us. Musicians have "seen the elephant". We sing about it. We play it. We have lived it. It's left us cold and lonely in a bus station. It's kicked us in the teeth. It's called us in the middle of the night with the news that tears us apart. It springs upon our souls when we least expect it. The people on this site know what it's like to loose. And when it comes to broken hearts, cold hearts or hearts that have stopped beating forever, all that other crap comes to a screeching halt. Peace Geo

The tough economic situation has put good people on edge.
There you have it in a nutshell. The economy is in troubled waters and the two camps of news people on both radio and television have nothing but negative news to report. I have taken to just listening to CD music while traveling, because there is NOTHING to listen to on talk radio but bad news. Doom, gloom, destruction everywhere! If you aren't careful it bleeds over into everything you do. My oldest son asked me just the other day. "Dad, do you feel some kind of dread all the time?" I replied "sure do son, take a load off your feet and turn that dad burned tv off, you'll feel better almost immediately."

Don't look now, but I'm afraid that's becoming more and more prevalant in society today. Less discipline, less self-control, more lashing out and general snottiness. And, sad to say, less willingness to apologize when the line has been crossed.

People are fine; there are some especially good people here. I believe hate talk radio and tv are contributing to the general decline in civility, and that the economy, season and moon cycle are stretching our rubber bands to the limit. We'll spring back.

I think that many people can be less than polite - or even downright impolite without even realizing it. I'm sure Chaosfrailer meant no offense by it - but his statement "I'm from the south, so I know when to run my mouth and when to shut it" carries the unspoken implication that he believes people that do not come from the south do NOT know when to run their mouths or when to shut them. Besides being impolite - his statement is demonstrably incorrect. I've noticed something interesting...which is that on some sites (I don't have a huge number of examples, but just what I've noticed) who basically allow flaming...it doesn't happen so much. Every now and then someone really gets it, but those sites are surprisingly civil compared to how this one can sometimes be. I really don't know why.
I'm on a Toyota forum (bought an old truck and needed to know how to fix everything), and people can be rude there sometimes, but I'm amazed at how it never degrades into the the sorts of nastiness that threads do here. You are allowed to attack people personally on some of these sites, you're allowed to be rude...and for some reason people just take care of things...
I would not say that it's because they allow personal attacks that it's more civil...that doesn't really make sense. But something about those sites, I just don't see this kind of nastiness. I've been trying to wrap my mind around why a banjo-player forum should turn nasty so much more often than a mechanic-off-road-enthusiast forum...but so far I can't figure it out. I really just basically never see the kind of stuff there that I see here.

I am seeing it more in our quiet little neighborhood also, as more people then ever now are losing their jobs, and now their homes, 2 people I jam with have been laid off of a job they just got a couple of months ago after spending 6 months looking for a job from the last one they got laid off of, and they had been there for many years.

Sadly, we are becoming a ruder society, and this is especially true on the internet. People say things on-line they wouldn't dream of saying to someone's face. Debate has devolved into name-calling and sloganeering, and basic politeness is dismissed as political correctness.

I keep lists of chores to be done, broken things to fix and projects to be worked on. Those lists make me grumpy because it has taken decades to see that everything takes at least 2X as much time as I imagine it will. So, I still keep those lists and tackle the stuff on them, BUT I write down what I actually get done, what I've acomplished. Often long, sometimes surprising.
My point is that the fresh perspective is far less frustrating. Been trying hard to do this daily for a week. . . . but the "grumpy factor" is lower than ever.

This forum is just a micro universe where people have only one common interest, one common aim (to play banjos) and all of their frustrations/ negative experiences and sore fingertips get magnified and manifest themselves with some of the less than pleasant comments they post here, I guess that some folks are much nicer in the bigger world than they sometimes appear to be here in Banjerland ! thats my bit of homegrown philosophy out the way, Now its the 5th of November and a man named Guy Fawkes is acting all suspicious outside the Houses of Parliament, so I must put my mask and cape on and fly !

Well, I am thrilled that there are so many good people on BH. When I was told to "go f.... yourself" when I had written about my third post here, a lot of good men rose up and defended, if not my honor, at least good manners. And I really appreciated that - thanks, guys. It gave me the courage to come back. I think that there is so much less concern for good manners on tv these days that it rubs off on some people and they begin to think it is alright everyplace else too. I remember a time when television was much different in regards to obscene language, etc. than it is today. Why, I even remember a man doffing his hat to me one time. I remember once a few years ago a man accidently said the "S" word in front of me and he actually apologized to me for his language. That made him a bigger man in my book. Kindness and thoughtfulness and good manners make us all look better no matter what people who don't exhibit them might think. So here's to those whose are still able to accept a different opinion and keep the icky remarks to themselves and to those who help the rest of us have a better day. Anyway - that's my story and I'm stickn' to it.
minstrelmike - Posted - 11/05/2009: 14:34:52
Television doesn't cause behavior; it reflects it. Otherwise advertising would be a lot more persuasive than it is.
I haven't seen behavior get worse, but then I've been in online discussion groups since before the web started in 1994. Similarly, I've been in groups of people my whole life and most people are nice but some aren't and sometimes they get really loud.
However, it is much easier to ignore people on the web than when they are screaming at you in real life yet most people act as if it's the other way around. Just because that post is always there and will always be there from now on, you don't have to read it or think about it or especially respond to it.
