If you turn the roll to the side and look at the hole, is that hole bigger than it use to be?
The one on Angel Soft is. I was just wondering why the people that make toilet paper decided to do this.

If the wound roll is the same size, but the hole/cardboard roll is bigger, you're getting less toilet paper. I would say that's why they're doing this - to give you less product for the same price.

I looked the word up and here is what I came up with. 1. lacking sense, significance, or ideas; silly: inane questions. 2. empty; void. I dont have a good answer..... _______________________________________________________ People will forget what you say and do, but they will never forget how you treated them.

Shall we avoid discussing things which are inane? Shall we dedicate ourselves to discussion only such matters as are strictly ane? Perhaps the posting procedure should be changed. We could submit a topic to a panel of the Mods (a p-ane-l, if you will). They could examinine it, (dare we say ane-alise it?) and decide if it is ane, inane, or insane, and flag it accordingly. Then, we who delight in rolling about in puddles of inanity, could click into those topics, and those of us who wish to dedicate our keyboards and brains to only the ane topics, could concentrate our efforts there.

It is to fool people into thinking they are getting more paper.
Most people look and think it looks bigger, so they think they are getting their moneys worth. I always look at the writing on the front, it tells you how much paper you are getting.

vintagewells - Posted - 11/04/2009: 07:25:12
They may be trying to fool us into thinking the paper is fluffier and therefore softer. We buy the economy big rolls from Walgreen when they are on sale. I haven't noticed a difference as they go by # of sheets. Check to see if a square of the paper is smaller. or the roll isn't quite as wide. Those are areas that they might be able to increase profits. Toilet paper paranoia. does this say something about us banjer pickers???? L rna

If the TP roll I.D is larger, but the O.D. remains the same - then I'd say it's for the same reason that the middle of the bottom of the hummus container is higher than it used to be. Yer gettin' cheated out of product - all the while thinking you're buying the same size you've always bought. "Defender of the Sacred Cod" Capio pisces, ergo sum

I was visiting a lady's restroom recently and I swear the TP was barely 3" wide. Now that's a serious problem!!!!!

I don't think they're inane. This one, for example, goes right to the heart of current ethically questionable marketing practices. Another recent post sparked a very interesting conversation that would have persisted for many more pages if some participants hadn't dragged religion into it. If you're looking for truly inane posts - head over to the Games Forum. Sam does pretty well IMO "Defender of the Sacred Cod" Capio pisces, ergo sum

I honestly didn’t think some toilet paper holes could get any bigger. I guess you can see that theory has been proven wrong. If I were you I wouldn’t worry too much about it and just consider the source.
To answer your question, industrial or commercial toilet paper has the larger diameter to accommodate locking or limited use type dispensers.
It’s possible that there making them all that way now or it may be what Brain and others have already stated. If you increase the ID then you can use less paper and still have it look as large as the competitors brand on the store shelf.

Candy bar companies have been doing it for years. Keep the price the same, just decrease the size of the product. Just more corporate rip off.
And I don't think the threads are nearly as inane as some of my answers.

Is it outane to suggest that the job isn't finished until the paperwork is done? There could be butane or propane but mostly methane.
Two year-old children work hard to stand there in the bathroom and figure out how long the roll really is.

It wasn't long ago that single ply tissue was thicker than the two ply stuff you now get. If they make it any thinner the roll will have to get larger. You notice that Angel Soft also has little bumps embossed on it. The little bumps are probably getting larger and the roll is wound less tightly. If they didn't do that then you would be lucky to have a roll of tissue over 1 1/2" in diameter.

wrentree - Posted - 11/04/2009: 15:27:05
I think that they are trying to get you used to the smaller size so they can sell an individual, one use pack of it. Course, with the larger hole, you could use a corn cob for that center bar if you lost it. I think we should anal-ize this some more.

edweber - Posted - 11/04/2009: 15:30:48
I've noticed that some TP widths are narrower by a quarter inch. I'm sure TP manufacturers are saving millions as well as the companies who've turned 1/2 gallon ice cream into 1.75 gallon ice cream. The same goes for the candy bar folks and food manufacturers in general everywhere. Food volume is less and packaging is smaller but the prices are either the same or they are going up.
