This is a call out to see if there would be any interest in a beginners workshop to be held one saturday in January. .Steve Jennison and Jane Crosby, both members on the hangout have recieved enough enquiries about the small workshop already run in Derby that it has been decided that it may be time to open the doors and have a really good beginners day for all here in the UK that fancy it. There is nothing better than these get togethers, it is truely amazing what we all learn, even we are just learning roll patterns. So guys and Gals what do you say? I can take you through some stuff and we can have a question and answer session, do some quick banjo fault finding if needed and YOU guys can all get to know each other. Don't be shy, we all had to start somewhere and it doesnt matter how far along as a beginner you are or how cheap our first banjo is, simply by meeting other folk with the same frustrations and problems as you will help you greatly. I think it is a great idea, so come on UK, let go for it. Contact these two guys or myself if you get stuck and i will pass you across.......Joe

Hi, can you send me more info if this workshop comes to fruition. I'm but a lonely guy in Wales just struggling through what ever info I can get of the net to try to learn how to play this thing. Definetley interested, depends on location and dates. cheers, Darren.
Will I ever be able to play

Sounds like a great idea Joe. I would certainly come along. The UK needs more of this. It should strike up some great friendships as well.
I don't mind funding rolls of wallpaper Joe..........Hehehehe.
alfiedog - Posted - 11/02/2009: 10:49:06
Sound good to me Joe.
muntjac - Posted - 11/02/2009: 11:19:11
Come on folks these are really usefull and are worth attending. The one in Derby has certainly grown from our first one in July 08. Joe is certainly a good tutor and we are a friendly bunch of like minded beginners.

What a great idea Joe.
Subject to Mrs.Viner`s state of health at the time, and you included "novices" too............I will do my best to be there, as she is in a bit of remission at the present time.
You certainly all appear to have a great time at Derby, and its a generous idea to widen the net. It would be smashing to meet other like minded players.
Could you keep me in the loop please.?
Regards.......................Peter V. Are these what you call the wet pants sessions ?
I`d rather be playing`grass than cutting grass.

certainly sounds like a good idea Joemac, a couple of us have been trying to get some interest in a get together here in Kent for any interested pickers, alas there just does not seem to be sufficient numbers of HO members in this neck of the woods, best of luck and keep the flag flying.

Joe has passed this buck honour on to me to keep you all in the loop, so I'll try to send a personal message to you all and make sure you're all kept updated. So try not to "junk" my emails.

Please count me in. I'm in Lancashire, so it will depend on distance and train availability. But it sounds great.

I would be keen too but it would be a heck of a long trawl from Inverness in the winter...We may end up with the wrong kind of snow...again..and I might end up stuck south of the border...Keep me posted please. Along the same vein, if anyone in Scotland would be interested I'm willing to organise something in the Highlands and open my doors, bar and spare beds if needed. Elizabeth

Could I just point out that this workshop is mainly for 3 finger picking style rather than clawhammer, though I know Joe can do both, which he will deny, but his forte is the former.
Ansacsteve - Posted - 11/03/2009: 22:49:10
As for the where. Its in the East Midlands. The village of Hilton is just off the A50 that links the M1 to the M6. The nearest main rail stations are Derby and Burton on Trent (each less than 10 miles away and anyway Im sure that you can be picked up). Also East Midlands Airport is only 20 mins away and is well serviced by Ryan Air. As for when. Its planned for around the end of Jan 2010, I will confirm this through Jane.

You know that Cecil Sharp House in London is running a series of banjo workshops currently? I think it's in mid-term now, and I missed the start, but was meaning to contact them to find out if they're planning a new term next year at all.

Where's it happening?! I could do with a break away and if I get to meet fellow pickers then all the better. I'm in Ireland so I'd want to be planning it in advance.

Try not to clog this thread up with jollity lovely boys, or I won't be able to keep track of who I've made contact with. Save it for the day

Such a great idea to be able to meet other players. Unfortunately, I feel a bit cut off here in the South West (Devon) bu maybe in the future, someone with experience may be able to start something here. Best wishes, Bryan

Don't worry Bryan, you're not that cut off. There's plenty going on south of Derby too. Paul Bienek is trying to arrange something similar, read here: http://www.banjohangout.org/myhango...blogid=14412And I believe there will also be instrument workshops during the day at the Bristol Bluegrass Day which is happening in March. Hope that helps, Jer Banjo Island http://www.ukbluegrass.com

Hi Everybody Here's the latest update on the January Beginners Workshop. To be sure that folks won't be disappointed Joe thought it a good idea to let you all know pretty much what will be covered on the day, because if you are an intermediate or expert player, this workshop may not be for you, it is designed with the beginner in mind.
This little list may help you decide if it's definitely for you. - Rolls, the application of rolls played seperately and together in differing patterns. - Introduction to Scruggs technique, the use of slides, pull offs and hammer ons. - Introduction to back-up techniques, the vamp and beyond. - Chordal structures across the neck. - Introduction to melodic banjo, simple licks and phrases. - Forming solos from set passages / licks and phrases. - Introduction to the art of improvising both in back-up and lead work. - Question and answer period, bring along your problem area's for us to discuss. Please bring your banjo and a manuscript book. All tab will be available for copying at the end of the day. Also I guess we can sit together and play some.

Hey I'd like to come along to this. Find a pub nearby where I could stay if possible...now lets see if I can persuade my wife I need to go, along with Rothbury (I'm a piper too) it would be a musical highlight. Might kick start my playing again - have played since 1989 but on and off for the last 9 years...

Love to be there if I can make it, please keep me informed...
