We've been working with a major Banjo maker on alternate materials that meet "green" environmentally friendly standards. After testing 3 different materials for machinabilty, durability and no voc's used in processing, we have settled on "Paperstone".
It is made of 100% recycled paper, water-based phenolic resin with cashew nut shell binder and pigment. Heat and pressure transform this mixture into a thoroughly impregnated network of cellulose fibers that give PaperStone its hardness, density and "ebony like" finish, perfect for our armrests.
We'll continue to provide Corian® ebony colored armrests, and carry the Paperstone as an alternative to those of you who want to "Go Green"
.

Hi Doug,

That's a nice looking armrest! Being a paper-based product, how would it hold up to moisture (i.e. sweat--not that I sweat that much while playing the banjo, mind you )?

It's made with a natural phenolic resin and 100% recycled paper that is virtually impervious to moisture. It's used in outdoor and indoor applications and has a very low absorption rate. We've tested it by submerging in water for hours with no affect on the dovetail mounting groove or overall finish. It's an excellent material for people who are subject to allergic reactions.
