Does anyone know where I can buy Nylgut strings in Australia or get them shipped to Australia? I tried my local music store and the guy I asked was stunned and confused - maybe even a little angry. He said he had no idea what Nylgut strings were and I said I had no idea either, but liked the sound they make anyhow! Elderly's got them on back-order without an expected arrival date.
Thanks!

Toby, it will be rare that any music store either in Oz or NZ would even know what nylgut strings are let alone stock them. I purchase ALL my strings etc from the US (www.elderly.com). I buy in bulk because they are so much cheaper and even with the freight it works out cheaper per set than local. I would advise that if you do get nylgut for a US based source that you check the postage rate very carefully. It probably won't be worth getting a few sets as the freight cost would be high.

aquilla or sands...Elderly is the place...Just Strings.com also...Aquilla's classical strings are probably what you want. the minstral string set will not last at open G. You might have to modify the nut on your Goodtime...they might break off at the knot from the Goodtime tailpiece also...maybe get a no knot t/p at same time? john

Gee! You're right about freight! You should have heard the large 'clunk' noise my eyes made when they hit the ground from shock.
I think I've got to keep saving to be able to get some of those strings. I'll also add a no-knot tailpiece to my ever-growing wishlist of banjo goodies. This is a whole new side to the banjo thang, gadgets and whatsits galore!

Toby, I have done some checking on the USPS (United States Postal Service) website and checked their rates for international postage to NZ. There can be a big difference for an item(s) that is sold via the supplier and what USPS say. I think it has something to do with insurance...maybe! Anyway, this is the problem we have living so far away from the source. What I would suggest is that if you have some picking buddies you may think about getting them to combine items for things that you all want and obtaining things in bulk. I play in a BG band here and as I said previously, I purchase all our strings and sundry items and while the freight is reasonably high, when you divide it amongst the items per person, you will actually save a lot of $$$. Hope it helps.

Chris Sands strings are pretty reasonable here, and they don't break as much as Nylguts. I used to use classical guitar strings but for a banjo you need 2 firsts a second a third and a fourth. That extra 1st can get expensive if you don't have a place to buy single nylon strings
