I just got a belt from Orvis that will put an end to worry about belt buckle rash. It is sold as a "No Scratch Gunner's Belt" but for my money they really should have called it a "No Scratch Banjo Picker's Belt." It's a little pricy at $79 but worth it IMHO. http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=1L9C

I had Dave at Dogwood Designs make me a belt and buckle. The buckle is leather covered so it won't scratch. I wanted a design with a banjo, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle on it. He can put about anything on it.

Also, I can't it right now, but one of the dobro players had a dress belt that was all leather and wouldn't scratch, but I can't find who it was right now.

I'm glad there are others who take care to either cover up their buckle or get a leather buckle that won't scratch! I wish more of us did this!

OR you could place your buckle between the 1st and 2nd loops of either side while you are playing. I learned that trick 40 years ago...and it works!

I agree, turn you belt so the buckle is to the side.

Cheapest and quickest fix -- right before you sit down to pick, tuck the end of your shirt underneath your belt buckle. When you are finished playing, tuck the front of your shirt back in your pants. Takes one second, and can be done with one hand while you hold the banjo in the other.

Unless of course you aren't wearing a shirt, in which case there are probably bigger issues than buckle rash.

Check out the Nay Musician's Belt. The same price as the Orvis and it's custom made. A stout belt. Plus, it's got a pocket for flat picks. Hmm, I need talk with Dave about a model that would store fingerpicks.

Fair disclosure: I'm friends with Dave.

You can also look for a mechanic's belt. They're made so they don't scratch fenders.

If you have Dunlap's Disease, it's not a problem with belt buckles.

Carhartt makes a mechanics belt and it is very reasonable.

I've been making the pickers buckle for over 20 years, stumbled on to the idea by accident, it's basically what someone else spoke about above, It's a western style oval shaped metal buckle , I cut & stamp the leather to go on it, with your name or initials or a design, stain it to match the belt.
I'm currently making one for Jimmy Cox.

We were in Sugar Creek, OH last year visiting the Amish Country. I ran across a leather dealer that sold what he called a mechanics belt. No buckle, inside latching metal catches, basket weave design. ONLY 12 bucks, any size. I thought I died and went to heaven.

Very heavy, great tooling and will last a long time.
