Hi Guy's

I am trying to identify a Scruggs Lick that is as familiar as the Tag Lick but just can't figure it out and it's driving me nut's

The lick starts on the Open D forth string a sustained note followed by two quick open first strings then a hammer on from 2-3 on the second string. I am not sure what follows a roll I think.

I am pretty sure the lick is used as a turnaround I just wish I had a sample to help explain things better. Can anyone offer a suggestion from the information given.

Thank's

Regards Tam

May help if we at least knew what song your talking about and if you have a recording of this song what time does the lick happen. Also have you searched the Tabs to see if there is an example there?

Hi Pepper

That's part of the problem I can't remember which tune. The lick actually appears in several tunes and each time I am at a concert it pops right out at me as if to say here I am again..

Might that be it? Ive seen some people pinch the bottom two holding the 3fret 2nd string instead of the single 1st string then hammer from 2-3 on the second.

It sounds like he's talking about the two-measure D lick that Earl uses at measure 10 of "Shuckin' The Corn" (and many other places as well).

Find the tab for the song you hear the lick in and see what it says.

Hi Lee

That's close but not quite. Matt sent me a similar tab.. The lick doesnt have the first string fretted at the second fret..

Thanks I really appreciate your help

Hi Ira

Thats close too the first measure yes but not the second one.

I guess I am going to have to identify a tune that has the lick in it. Many of these licks are very similar I hadn't realised so many start out the same way.

Thanks for your help

"Many of these licks are very similar"

Yes, they are. In the tab suggested by Possum, just change the fretted 1st string to open and you might be getting closer to the lick you're looking for. Also consider hitting the open 1st string at the same time you hammer 2-3 on the 2nd to emphasize the D. But as you said, you might have to name a recording that uses the specific variation of this you're looking for.
