This past Saturday, after contacting John via the BHO, we met before their show here in STL.
Just wanted to say that John was more than friendly.
We talked before the show, and, he signed one of my used banjo heads. He even signed a used head that belongs to my kid instructor, who's away at college. Yep, we took a couple of pictures, and, talked about banjos a little.
On a serious note, John asked me if I had his buddy Steve Martin's CD --"The Crow"?
I admitted to John that I didn't have it "yet", but, I've asked my kids to mention it to "Santa" for this Christmas. I guess it would be a stocking stuffer or something.
John gave me a big grin and said to make sure that Santa puts it on his list for me, because-- the CD is one heck of a CD! He said that I had to get it!
John, if you're reading this post, thanks again for taking the time to talk.

I have to tell you that the Crow cd is well worth it. Steve Martin also has that album tablature out. Check it out.
 Gotta smile

Did I understand correctly when you said, Steve Martin has the tablature for the Crow Album? Where? ---------------------------------------------- "A life lived in fear is a life half lived." - Fran, "Strictly Ballroom" (1992)

The Will the Circle Be Unbroken albums rang all my bells, and rocked my world! They're all good, but the original is still one of my alltime favorite albums.

He recently played just up the road from me in Nashville and I MISSED his performance. I will try not to let that happen again!!

String Wizards I & II are definitely a couple of my favorite banjo albums.
... not to mention some *old* NGDB.

John's playing on Randy Lynn Rag, Clinch Mtn Backstep and Opus 36 (Clemente) on the 1st Dirt Band record (Uncle Charlie) was responsible for me buying my first banjo in 1970 (ish) ... it was a Harmony plastic pot banjo ...
by the time "Will the Circle #1" came out, I was a sold out 5 string nut ... loved Togary Mtn
He was so very kind to my daughter (Molly - ampearce here on the BHO) and I at Huck Finn last summer ...
she has the pic that he agreed to take with her on her "wall of heros" ...
thanks John !!

He was the first person I heard play Bach on the banjo. I remember thinking - Well, if he can play THAT...(new possibilities starting unfolding in my brain...)

Yep, same here. McEuen was a HUGH influence over the way I approached the banjo (3-finger and clawhammer). --Dean

Like many of you, I too was drawn to the banjo by John (and Mr Hartford); and the Dirt Band's music remains some of my favorite to this day. For such an exceptional talent he is such a humble, classy guy, and a great ambassador of the music.
If you haven't seen the video, "A Night in The Ozarks", which John produced as a tribute to the Dillards (one of John's major influences) don't miss it.

thanks for the correction ... I can't believe that I've never heard of a single one of them. NGDB history started with Uncle Charlie for me. The Pearce Family Bluegrass Band www.pearcemusic.com

Gary, I saw NGDB in St Louis as well Saturday nite. What a great show as they always put on. And I have to agree with him Steve Martin's CD is fantastic. You might want to sneak it in before Xmas. Hate to see you wait that long for a great CD. It is well worth it.
