I have 2 machines running Vista 64 and 3 running XP Pro. I'm going to upgrade one of the Vista machines when I get a chance.
Sorry I can't help , but I'd be surprised if it's as stable as XP Pro (like they say it is).
I hope your upgrading a Vista machine, or performing a clean install, because an XP machine will require a re-installation of ALL programs.
Good Luck !
Let us know how it turns out.

They say W7 is faster and less "annoying" than Vista. After a year of getting used to Vista, I'm not annoyed, and speed is not an issue.
My XP machines are fine.
Why fix 'em if they ain't broke?

YMMV, but I use a Windows laptop at work. Its performance has improved exponentially under W7, including some audio production work, and the user interface is dramatically better. It also seems more reliable; at least I've had no issues with programs crashing or needing to reboot the machine. In terms of stability, speed, and ease of use, it's comparable to the latest version of the Mac OS, at least on comparably-equipped machines.

I played with one yesterday. I have to admit I was impress. I might even bite on it. I refused Vista and have been running XP on all the computers.
7 ran faster and smarter. I liked it a lot.

I'm sure it's fine, but as a twenty year Mac man, I view all of those Microsoft products as weak Apple clones that as awkward and overly complicated. They do a decent job of copying Apple's basic look, but none of those products (to me) have Apple's simplicity, workability, and elegance.
I guess that's why Apple stock (AAPL) closed at well over $200.00 a share today.

... again be a Microsoft guinne pig, I mean new user. Done it 2x and got burned real bad both times. Same for Autodesk products.
Vista was so bad even Norton and Quickbooks werent compatible. And HP packaged Vista with Norton! Wait for the service upgrade.
Oh, in short DON'T yet.

My favorite machine is an XP box before that Windows 2000. Both bulletproof or as much as a PC can be.

I've been running the eval copy of Win7 since August and like it a lot. I've had no issues and plan to buy the 64 bit version next spring when the eval expires.

I moved up from Vista to Win7 last Friday. I haven't seen any real difference in much of anything. The task bar is a little different. I guess the only thing I havn't had since I upgraded are the boxes that tell me that a program has crashed and then it says search internet for solution, only to never find any solution. So If that is a fix then that's the only real difference I have found. I'm sure there must be something else in here I'm missing, but no faster, no slower, just more stable at this point.
For all you MAC fans I have had the urge to try a MAC, but it is just so expensive, and none of my work programs will operate under MAC. Henceforth, Windows I go.

I have XP on my main PC and Vista on a laptop. The Vista has had a few hiccups dealing with other software, but it's okay. I'm going to wait a little while until more reviews on 7 come in, but if Trent's experience holds up with others, I might spring for it. Sounds like it has some good navigation and speed improvements. I'd probably reformat the PC first though. It's a big, powerful machine (Alienware), but it's really slowed down over the 4 years I've had it. Big job re-installing various programs, but sometimes this PC acts like somebody poured molasses into it.

My brother has the same laptop I have. He is running W7, and I am running a downgrade to XP Pro ( from Vista). This is a 10 month old laptop and it has had more issues than any mahcine I have used in 10 years... not related to SW. I generally like the XP Pro. He tells me I will be tons more pleased when I go to W7. He is a techno-geek with extra-ordinary skills, and really knows his stuff, so I am going to take his advice on it. His opinion is that it is a VAST improvement over Vista. .... Therefore, I will get the chance to see very soon, I think.

We ran XP for years, as we bought new computers when it first came out, and xp came with them. We heard a lot of bad things about Vista, but when I upgraded our computers (mine and the wife's) I bought computers with Vista installed and was pleasantly surprised to find that Vista performed quite well for us. We've been running the new computers for about six months and like them, and Vista very much. After 7 has a chance to settle down, we may go ahead and upgrade, but for now, we'll wait.

I find Audacity handy, primarily when converting between MP3 and WAV formats. It's a stable and capable program. Still all on Vista.

I've been running MS operating systems since 2.11. (I missed out on 1.0, I was using CP/M then, SSB-DOS before that) Generally speaking, the odd-numbered ones have been the most successful, but I've never really had much trouble with any of 'em. The 3 computers I have now are all 3-8 years old, all running XP. I'll wait until I need a new machine and then get one with '7 or whatever the current OS is at the time. I see no point in 'upgrading' even if my hardware would support it, which I doubt.

The time has definitely come to switch. So I'm buying a Mac for my main work and music studio computer. Already running my home network on Linux.

I think i will take the plunge and buy windows 7. I never bothered with vista, but my company will probably upgrade to it so need to get familiar with it. Actually looking forward to it :)

Wowee. This is a classic Hangout thread, campers.
Simple questions: "anyone using it?" Four out of 18 respondents who have. Sort of.
"Anyone using with Audacity?" No answers, although there is some praise for Audacity, which is cool.
Gotta say I'm no further along in deciding. Not grumbling, mind you. I appreciate the thoughts, regardless.

I use it at work and it is fine, toolbars are a little different, the Word and Excel programs are a little different but with more icons may be easier to learn for a beginner.

I upgraded my main computer with an in-place upgrade of Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate. It was painful. I have a couple of blog entries documenting the experience here: http://www.fontlife.com/victor/blog.aspx
I also upgraded my daughter's ASUS EEEPC 1000HE netbook, That one had XP, so Windows 7 needed to be a custom install which basically wipes out XP and installs Windows 7 fresh. That experience was much easier. The only issues with that install were with the propriety ASUS drivers. ASUS has not released Windows 7 drivers yet for ACPI and the SuperHybridEngine. Fortunately, the XP drivers work fine.
I have one more computer to go and that's the one my wife uses. That computer is 7 years old and the graphics card won't run Aero. I may end up building a new PC for my wife instead of upgrading.

Ya gotta remember Mr. Gates has to have new stuff for his cottage so therefore ya gotta buy a new OS. I've been dealin' with this stuff since W3.1 and DOS 3.1 so nothing new. Its still a pain and right now I am building a dedicated XP machine for recording music only............why? cuz it works.

Ubuntu (Linux). It's free, it works, it's stable. And virtually every piece of software you'll need is free and open-sourced. Version 9.10 releases tomorrow.
I like Ubuntu more and more every day.

Fixing computers and keeping users happy is my business. I always recommend waiting for the first service pack before upgrading whether it's Mac or Windows. What I use at work is a ThinkPad T23 with Ubuntu 9.04. It's a discarded old laptop with a replacement hard drive.
