Good question. In addition to the usual run of Gibsons, I'm seeing a lot of Deerings and some Stellings up on the stages. Certainly, there are plenty of professionals who are picking Hatfields and Osborn Chiefs.

Life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.

So, how many schoolyard fistfights did his folks not even THINK about, when they named their son "D Cup"?

Well, you've just been contacted by me, for a free one.

I have been advised to learn from studying the techniques of the professional banjo players.
And if asking for free, high quality banjos is a technique they employ, I'd be a fool not to give 'er a shot.

spent most of the day yesterday with Dana at Arthurs house. We all picked pretty much all day, while Arthur put the final touches on Dana's new Celebrity Hatfield. Dana is not only a great guy to hang out with, but a great picker as well!

I get a lot of requests for sound files of my banjos which I never have any but I was informed by Dana yesterday that Bobby Osborne and Rocky Top Express will be performing at half time at the University of Tennessee homecoming cermonies Sat.Nov. 7th. Dana will be playing his new Celebrity model banjo. They will be doing the Tenn. state song Rocky Top really dont know if they are doing any other songs or just the one. I forgot to ask him Maybe Dana will chime in on it. with a bit more info. about this event. But almost sure the U T homecoming game will be televised on National T V

Wonder why he did not opt for a "Fitch"? I am sure the Hatfield sounds great too.

Interesting observation, here: I have searched ebay multitudes of times, and have never seen a Hatfield for sale, there. FWIW

Maybe the reason you don't see any of Arthur's banjo's on e bay is because those who have them, want to keep them. I saw Arthur yesterday and he said he is "covered up" in work, and staying very busy.

I thought that Dana played an Osborne Chief. What happened with that banjo?

Just curious.

I guess dana didnt like that RK Pre-War Rim Smell!................On the serious side, theres good banjos out there, but nothing beats the quality and service of a Hatfeild Banjo

I have a recording king Osborne Scout. It is one of the two prototypes that were made. As I have mentioned in several threads here, I have played a lot of shows with it on the road, and many times on the Grand Ole Opry. It's one of the finest banjos made. I've known Greg Rich since the late eighties, and in my opinion he is one of the men that brought the Gibson banjo back. Period. That is why we often hear the term "Greg Rich Era" The banjos made during his time as Gibson were better than before he was there. And they don't seem to as good since he's been gone. And those banjos made during Greg's time at Gibson are worth more. Greg's affiliation with Recording King has provided all of us with a TOP QUALITY banjo at a very reasonable price. He has paid attention to all the neccessary details that, in my opinion, is matched by few. Frank Neat is one of best ever and still is. His work is simply as good as it gets. I have several banjos with necks that he has made, and also have complete banjos he has made. Like the scout, I have played it all over the country, and used it to record with Bobby O. Arthur Hatfield builds banjos with the same attention to all of the details, and he makes sure the banjo is built to the satisfaction of the person who will be playing it. He has worked tirelessly with me to understand what I want in a banjo, and has more than satisfied me with his celebrity model. I will be playing it this Saturday at The UT homecoming game in Knoxville with Bobby O.

That was my point, Dana. In a gentle way I was pointing out the differences between Arthur Hatfield, and other "builders," who shall remain nameless. I've also been to Arthur's more than once, and have never heard him jock his banjos, and I have certainly never seen where he has one day only sales to move them. He's the best.

I'm with you Kevin. I agree completely. Sometimes my diplomacy leaves something to be desired!

I like RK banjos. We sell them at the music shop here in town and they seem to please. Greg Rich is a great guy and a Comedian too.

Great Lakes,R&T,RK,Chiefs,pw Gibsons, new Gibsons remember the mushroom banjo?
His tone is always been great on whatever he plays the Hatfield should serve you well.

I wouldn't sell or trade my Hatfield Special for any other banjo made. I can't wait to see Dana play his new Hatfield at the U T halftime show. It will make me proud.

What's with all the hating? A guy advertises a well made banjo to the audience that might be interested and contributes a portion of sales to keep the BHO alive. And I've seen plenty of Hatfields, Stellings, Hubers, Bishlines, Chiefs, etc. for sale used. In fact I think at least one of the commenters on this thread sold a Hatfield. Lighten up. Cliff Fitch shared plenty of inside information here on banjo construction, setup and marketing. This site is diminished by his absence.

Wow, Dana using a Hatfield? The last time I heard Dana he was still using his Osborne banjo, which I thought sounded great.

I think alot pro banjo players are using Hubers now. I think Ron Block, Jim Mills, Sammy Shelor, and Cory Walker all use Hubers. My producer likes them better than the new Gibsons.

I don't know Dana personally, but I'm sure that if he wanted to play a Huber banjo, that's what he'd play. His choosing a Hatfield banjo really speaks well of the quality of Arthur's work.

For the record, I think Doug was/is just having a little fun! I will leave the other comment alone! Forrest, If ya ever get the chance make sure to introduce yourself to Dana. He is a very personable fella!

Yeah I'm perfectly aware that if Dana wanted to play a Huber he would. I was refering to the OP when he asked what banjos the pros were using.
