I just acquired this on bay. The seller calls it 'Vintage Old Time 5 Sting'. I haven't found any conclusive info on the internet to ID the maker. The peghead shape suggests Buckbee. The steel neck brace suggests SS Stewart. The narrow heel suggests Rettberg & Lang. Any info would be welcome. Several Pics are on my BHO Homepage.
Thanks for your help, Paul

The peg head is typical J. Buckbee.

That's the closest I've seen to my old banjo Paul.....the inlay and everything. See my photos if you're interested.
I've also been told my no-name is more than likely a Buckbee......how does it sound?

Its much louder-deeper than I expected. It currently has 'light' metal strings and is tuned to standard G lowered to D#. I'm considering changing to Nylgut to lessen the stress on neck.
I don't know how old it is but it could be 1900+/-.

I was told mine was 1890s by the fella who sold it to me and on the HO.

Oh yeah....mine has a plucky, tinny, warm sound but its not loud....I had to stuff it as the overtones were real unpleasant but I love the sound of it now. I had light gauge strings on it but now I have mediums and it brightened it up a bit......a little less plucky.
