There exists a photograph of Lily Mae Ledford and "The Coon Creek Girls" that shows Lily Mae with an RB-12 sans resonator.I probably have a copy of it somewhere but I have not been able to turn it up.Anybody got one you might post?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujFy...&feature=fvw I wouldn't know an RB-12 from a cantaloupe, but it might be the picture that accompanies this youtube video.

Did she play on the same show with Scotty Wiseman who also is pictured with a 5 string RB 18 with no resonator? I would guess they are each pictured with the same banjo, for some reason.

Thanks, but LML definitely had a style 12 in the photo I recall having seen.

Lilly Mae did work on WLS before switching to The Renfro Valley Barndance. Scotty was on WLS, but I don't know the years when Scotty used an 18 or when Lilly did. Lilly Mae had hers at Renfro Valley and Scotty was still at WLS, so maybe she got it from him? She did use the resonator. I'll check up on this some more.

cabinwood - Posted - 10/21/2009:  20:55:21

Here she is w/ an 18 from a "Renfro Valley Keepsake" from 1940. I figure the photo could be a little older.

Here's one of Bascom Lamar Lunsford w/ an RB 18 w/ the resonator off of it.

I've seen a color pic with Scotty playing an 18. Any pics that show any engraving on the others?

I haven't seen any shot close enough to show engraving, but I've seen him use it w/ both the resonator on and off.

Isn't there some on the armrest?

Yes, you can see that clear enough. There's also engraving on the band, flange, and I'm assuming the tonering, but it's hard to see from these photos.

In the pictures I'v seen of him and his granada I think the resonator was removed in all of them. I cant recall seeing the granada with the resonator on it

I would think that flange resting on your lap would be pretty uncomfortable.

The banjo is hanging, with a strap around his neck, like a saxophone...

Lunsford has the T-T sitting on his lap without the resonator. I'll bet the flange was cutting the blood off to his legs.

Mike,

Google "coon creek girls" and then look at the images part. There are several with her playing the RB-12 without the resonator.

I found this last night in my stuff. Lily Mae has the fiddle in this shot, but it must be her banjo w/o resonator.

Do I see Kluson Deluxe stair step tuners on the top- tension fording the creek?

I've always thought the CCGs were hotties.By the way,I haven't seen a photo of LML and her banjo that shows presence or absence of engraving. Is it a 12 or an 18?Does anybody know for sure? All Can see is that it ain't a 7(at least by the fingerboard pattern). The two RB12s I know did not have Kluson pegs.
I wonder if they shot any more pictures down at the creek.....

Mike, I've been looking for the same thing. I haven't come across any photos close enough to tell if it's an 18 or 12. I have a lot of stuff, so I'll keep looking.

I did come across another of Scotty Wiseman. This time the resonator is on again. It's at a show in PA.

I'm glad you like the ticket, Flathead. Sunset Park was a great place, wasn't it?. The backstage was unreal w/ the amount of signatures etc.

The way she's a' carryin' that banjer across the creek looks like a mighty good way to break the neck off'n hit!

I'm thinking it's a 12. This photo dates from around 1950. The banjo seems pretty bright. I would think the gold on a well-used 18 would have dulled by then. The chrome would stay like new.

Mike Johnson - Posted - 11/02/2009:  15:33:27

Terry,Thank you! This is the very photograph I had in mind when I first posted.I too think it's a 12 (as I remembered thinking the first time I saw it) but the other picture showing the tuners tell me it is not the particular banjo I thought it might be.

More to the point...where is it now?

Perhaps her son J.P. Pennington of the group "Exile" could tell us. I volunteer to attend one of their reunion shows at Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and ask him.
