I worked on the usual forward roll beginner songs to start with (Boil Them Cabbage Down, Aunt Rhody, and the like), but I guess Cripple Creek was the first Scruggs song I learned. At least it was the first one of the songs in the Earl Scruggs book that I could play.
I can already grin

"Beverly Hillbillies" was the first Scruggs style song I learned. The first song I ever learned on banjo was "Another Morning" off Bela Fleck's Double Time with Jerry Douglas. I don't think it counts as Scruggs style though. It's close, but not quite Scruggs I think.

FMB. But I'm still working on it. I learned some other songs meanwhile, but occasionally go back to FMB. I don't think it sounds very good without a guitar backup, at least, and I guess that's why I keep giving up on it.

I remember something like that first time around. And being soft plastic, did you hear the groove before and after the one the needle was in? Shane.

Bonanza or the Marlboro commercial...can't quite remember which one came first.Probably around the same time as the Marlboro commercial aired during Bonanza.
OldFox - Posted - 10/24/2009: 12:40:09
I started with Geoff Hohwald's Banjo Primer, so it would have been Boil Them Cabbage Down followed by Cripple Creek, Shady Grove and Worried Man Blues. Can't say I mastered them, but these were the first ones I worked on and could get through. Still working on most of them sometimes.

DaveOmega - Posted - 10/24/2009: 14:32:39
Steam Powered Aereo Plane was the first tune I ever learned. I picked up a banjo and figured it out by ear. The next day I purchased a banjo and I've been pickin' ever since. Foggy Mountain Breakdown (at least a very basic version of it) was probably the next thing I tried.

Banjo in The Hollow - as humble as it sounds - I just broke 60bpm and stayed stable (more or less) .
