So, there used to be this club for boat owners whose boats were more valuable than their cars. It was a matter of personal pride for some folks to show pictures of their dumpy pickups pulling $10,000+ competition ski boats . . .

Well, last week as I was driving home from Redwood City, CA, where I bought my first "nice" banjo, which is still pretty modest (an RK-R80 valued at around $1000), I realized that the banjo was probably worth more than my car (a 1995 Ford Escort Wagon with close to 200K miles). I have to admit, I felt some pride knowing that I placed my banjo in such esteem as to pay more for it than for my primary mode of transportation.

So, I thought it would be fun to start a similar club here -- the "Banjo Worth More Than Car" club -- and let people show off pictures of their banjos and cars. OK, so I'll post mine when I have enough for a digital camera.

I bought my banjo when I had a clunker car, but now I have a reasonably nice car.

So, I guess I'm former club member.

I got an old Maple Blossom, a Gold tone 250F,and an old Kay,all together their worth more than my car an pick-up 4X4 put together . Go figure!

I'm driving a $600 car, so yes, my banjo is worth more. As long as the car gets me to gigs I have no problem with that.

Gun collectors are the same. I know several that have way over a hundred thousand in old Winchesters, Colts, etc., and drive a 15 year old car. And, it takes one to know one! Hah!

If I could use the value of both banjos I own, a Gibson RB12, and a 1925 BB Mastertone, I think I'd qualify.
I drive a 2005 Dodge Ram.

I love it -- you're all in.

How about some pictures, though? And to quantify it a little more, let's establish a ratio: Banjo Value / Car Value. I just barely squeak in at a 1.0 (1000/1000), but that's with a pretty modest banjo at $800 - $1000. What about a raffle? The one with the highest ratio gets ten bucks from each contestant so he/she can get a new ca- . . . I mean banjo!

My car maxes at about $2800, less than my 1927 MT conversion's value.

I take a good message from this thread, if you don't p*ss away your money on vehicles, which DE-value, perhaps you'll have money to buy nice instruments, which usually GROW in value, or at least maintain value.

Pity poor Jim Mills, who collects both original flat head 5 string Mastertones AND fine English shotguns!!! He must ride a bicycle around home. Or ride Shank's Mare.

I guess I'm in the club, my banjos are certainly worth more than my 2002 Ford Ranger pick up. I'm gonna guess my factor would be around 3+ I guess?

Cash for clunkers? NO WAY!

Former club member here too. When I bought my Crafters it was worth 3 times what I got in trade for the truck I was driving at the time.

96 Dodge Ram 1500 with 375K miles on it. I got 900.00 for it in trade on the truck I'm driving now. In fact it's the old red truck in my signature pic.

$80 used Ford

Close, but the Framus has a top-tension hoop. Hard to find one, used, for $80.
Add the set of 5-star geared pegs, and we're wellpast $80.

Either of my main banjos outvalue my '97 F150.
I suppose my StewMac Vintage kit is worth about the same as the truck.

My boat's worth much more than all the banjos and the truck(and my wife's Yaris),though.

I hate cars. If I had even half the $$ I've had to spend on cars, repairs, insurance, etc. over the years I could be pickin' under a plam tree in Barbados today. I that includes the 11 years I lived in St. Petersburg with no car. OK, OK, I know. I probably would have p***ed it away on banjos and guitars.

My banjos, even just The Mutt, are worth more to me than any car made!

Banjo $8000/Car 0 (I have no car at this time. I left my car with my son in Florida when I came to NC, then decided not to return to Florida).

I've got two or three pretty decent banjos, and the car I drive is a 1996 Ford with 303,000 miles on it-- so Yes, Definitely! Any one of my banjos is worth a whole lot more than the car!

Proud to be in the club.

The following is dedicated to members of the "my banjo's worth more than my car" club (to be played to the tune of Wabbash Cannonball):

I drove down the highway in a car that made a ping
To spend what should have gone on her to buy an old five string.
I’m not talkin’ octane, man, this car was really sick.
So, why, I thought, lay down so much for hopes of one clean lick.

Then as I headed back for home on close to her last mile,
The thought of playin’ Cannonball brought to my face a smile.
'Cause even though she’s only made of metal, string and wood,
My new girl can take me places where she never could.

Woody Guthrie did a fine job of new words to told tunes.

hum

I collectively have banjos all put together that might be worth more than my truck, maybe.

Cars are another love of mine so dont really own a beater

Rick

MTBanjo - Posted - 10/22/2009:  08:10:06

Well...my truck might technically be a "beater"...but I have way more invested in it than my banjo. But just like banjos, if you buy a stock, nice banjo for $2000, and put a $1000 tonering in it, add a $600+ rim, fancy bridge etc., you can't add all that on top of the price of the banjo were you to sell it. It is not now a $3000+ banjo.

I really like Toyota trucks...and I've got enough invested in my '83 to have bought a late 90's Tacoma...but still, it's probably not worth much more than $2000 if I sold it. So...while my truck is kind of a "beater" and maybe only worth as much as my banjo, I'd still say I'm a "car guy".

Even my rattiest banjos are worth more than my old '88 Mazda B2200 pickup with 205K miles on it. A couple years ago some lady just pulled out of a parking lot and smashed it up a bit, doing $3500 in damage to the truck. Regrettably the insurance would only repair what the car was worth and it was almost worthless according to Kelly bluebook. So they gave me $1700 and issued me a salvage title. I bought the car back from the junkyard for $250. It still ran great! I found a cheapy fly by night repair shop that got me on the road again for $550. That left me about a grand to go buy more banjos with!
I have had my beloved Mazda since 1990 and it has never missed a beat since I got it. Now it looks and and runs just fine and have no hesitations taking it on 1000 mile adventures.....with banjos of course!
Would someone like to hit me again, I could use another banjo!

Well, I’ve never bought a new vehicle, but I have bought several new instruments. I suppose if you add up the street value of all my vehicles, motorcycle, boat, canoe and trailers they’d probably match the value of my instruments. However the vehicles keep going down in value, and I keep having to pay for taxes, licenses and insurance on them. Banjer just needs a change of strings every now and then.

I have a late '20s or early '30s original RB5 - value is subject to what someone would pay at any given time. Who knows?
I drive a 2005 Dodge ram 4x4 so I think my banjo is worth more than the truck. It sure is to me anyway lol.

An emotive subject. What is value for money or more to the point why bring bring money into it at all? As you can guess I have just got a mother and father of a banjo, i wish my playing ability could do it justice, maybe one day it will. We all like to own good things, be it a car, a mansion, boat or plane but we need anyof these things? The other reason to buy the best you can is that you can beat the dealers out profit they make from your trade ins!

After all said and done you new truck is tomorrows landfill!

I actually have a very nice car, but I stole it from the original owner for $300.00 because it wouldnt fit in their driveway anymore. It's a 1993 Cadillac Deville with only 123,000 miles! I think the cheapest banjo I own is worth at least a grand, and I have a 1983 Martin D-28 and a newer 000-18 that I never play that I could probably buy several more junk cars with. I'm in!
