Johnny

Listened to the clip.....nice picking on all of the tunes.

I believe you will like it even better at a G sharp......The ring is capable of G all the way up to an A sharp.

The hollow tone leaves at about a G.....I try to find a fat sound on the D string without it sounding hollow.

Thanks Dave, I also like it at G#. I tried A but was too much and lost some punch. Is this Kentucky punch instead of Hawaiian? It comes out better on the hammer-ons and especially up the neck.

Johnny - the tone ring sounded very good. Your picking is outstanding and if the songs on your home page are some of your favorites, then you and I think just alike - great selection!!!!

PS: I am also a designer, but probably not the same kind as you!!!!!

Merry Christmas!

Just wanted to say this ring is getting better all the time in my Huber Lancaster as it settles in. You know you have a good one when people notice a difference in your banjo that are not around it a lot. I have been getting a lot of compliments on this banjo lately. Someone asked me a couple of nights ago. "Did you do something different to your Huber?" My head is setting at about an A.

BlueBanjo28 - Posted - 12/27/2009:  07:29:54

I went back to a G for the head tension. Maybe it is just my banjo but for my ear, it sounds best to me at G.

Forrest - Posted - 12/27/2009:  08:29:44

My Berkshire sounds best to me right at a G# with the HR-30 ring. I don't think there is a right or wrong to head tension with these rings, since I've read here of folks running them between a G and A or higher. What a fantastic ring! I'm loving mine.

HookedOnBluegrass - Posted - 12/28/2009:  05:39:51

My picked my Huber up with the new HR-30 ring while at IBMA and like Double E mine is getting better and beeter as the ring mates with the pot. The neck is vibrating so much that it loosens the screw on the fifth string tuner. For a new banjo this thing is screaming!! Im still considering the new rim to make it a truetone but it has so much clarity and tone that I dont know how it could get better than it is now. Im completely satisfied with this new ring.

Forrest - Posted - 12/28/2009:  11:46:34

That's funny, because I've also had to snug up the 5th string tuner screw several times on mine due to it vibrating loose.

double E - Posted - 12/28/2009:  11:58:27

HA! I laughed when I read what Hooked On Bluegrass said, and then Forrest in the next comment, because my fifth string screw has been vibrating loose more frequently lately. I didnt think alot about it untill I read these comments. Maybe we need to tell Steve Huber his new ring is shaking our banjos apart!! I would like to try one of the new rims when Steve has them ready, but I wonder also if it could be noticeably better than what I have now.

Yep!

Update on the head tension: FWIW, I had my HR-30 s/n #29 on my parts banjer at A# for a while and it sounded great, but as the colder dryer weather commenced, it was getting to sound just a little too bright for more my taste. So, last week I tweaked the head tension back to half way between A and A#. Sounds great there now.

I would be interested in what more HR-30 owners are finding as the best head tension.

I had a Huber head on my HR-30 till I discovered that my Burlile sounded better with a Taiwan Remo head. It really brought out the tone on this Huber HR-30 ring. It really doesn't make sense
that the Huber head didn't sound good with it. I thought it sounded good but now I know the real potential of this Huber ring. I should let Huber know this I guess.
I had a few Taiwan Remo heads in a drawer.
I had to load a sound file in my music. It is the first one listed.

I've owned a Lancaster for 6 years and I can't even imagine a better sound comming outa this thing (well a better picker would work), but I,d love to go visit Steve's shop. I'm not in a financial position to buy a new ring anyway, but my wife has been wanting to visit Nashville anyhow so...is the shop actually in Nashville or Henderson? Maybe I could at least try one of these new rings out...

Forrest - Posted - 01/14/2010:  06:14:39

Huber's shop is in Hendersonville, TN.

Hello friends!

Jim here...from Huber Banjos...

…just wanted to let you know that Steve and I will be at SPBGMA in Suite 2094 from Thursday afternoon through Saturday night. We'll have plenty of the new HR-30 tone rings available as well as a half dozen new Huber Banjos - some with the HR-30 tone ring and some with the Vintage Flathead tone ring . We would enjoy having you stop by and experience what we’ve been working so hard to accomplish the last 2 years.

Hope to see you there!

I plan on installing one into my '27 Gibson 3 soon.

Anyone know what the cost would be to send my Lancaster into Huber and have them install a new ring. If anyone else has done so. Thanks

They say something is worth what people will pay for it. Seems he's got lots of folks lined up to pay it.

I have to confess . . . I have two Huber banjos with HR30 rings. I can't wait to get home after work and pick 'em!

Flathead75 - Posted - 03/02/2010:  19:09:08

Well I did it! Steve put an HR-30 ring in my 30's TB-2 conversion at SPBGMA. I had a solid ring in it before and loved it. Needless to say this thing is truly special now. More bite all over and more balanced up high than the solid ring, and the tone is incredible!. I will never be as good as my banjo...so I guess I am out of excuses! This is an incredible ring and I believe it should be at the top of the list if you are looking for a high quality ring !

banjodr - Posted - 03/02/2010:  21:06:25

You gotta be kiddin me......you actually put that ring in your banjo?

tubeandplate - Posted - 03/03/2010:  08:32:50

Keith-Don't kid yourself...it's not the HR-30 vs. the Vintage Flathead tonering swap that made the difference...

...it's the 20 holes....

...shhh...don't tell anyone....

The old rings are good, but I think the HR-30 is so much goooder! Is that a word?

Fred Frank - Posted - 03/03/2010:  15:27:02

"That" is indeed a word. I just don't know if "goooder" is a word.

I don't understand this at all.
If you have a great rim and ring, how can you "put it in" a banjo? All you can do is put a different neck on the pot.

For example, say you have a Stelling...
If you take a Timeless Timber rim and a new Huber tone ring pot assembly, you can't really "put it into" the Stelling, you're just bolting the Stelling neck onto the TT rim. What you end up with is certainly not a Stelling banjo.

I guess the way I see it is either the rim and the neck or the rim and tone ring ARE the banjo.
If you have a Gibson, you can replace the tone ring and still have a Gibson... but if you replace both the rim and the tone ring, all you have is a Gibson neck attached to something else.

I know there are different opinions on this, but I chuckle when I read about someone putting a FF rim and Sullivan ring "into" a Morgan Monroe banjo. Basically, I think they have a Sullivan with a MM neck on it, not a Morgan Monroe "banjo" anymore.

I've had Hubers competition offer me more than $200 trade in value to remove my Huber ring and put in another. It's tempting

docmorgan - Posted - 03/05/2010:  17:41:06

20 holes is the key .

myfavefive - Posted - 03/06/2010:  17:35:57

Ron Stewart's Vintage Huber ring he had in his TB-1 for 10 years was a no-hole.

My HR-30 just gets better every day. Thought I would give it another plug. It has that fat sound and don't stand next to a wall, it could damage your ears!
The head tension is the key on this one. I have it at a G but to each his own.

I would hang on to that old Huber tone ring. You may not like the new sound. Also, if they cut your rim to put in another tone ring, your original Huber ring may not fit correctly.

BlueBanjo28 - Posted - 03/25/2010:  09:31:33

Just wondering, my new Huber ring doesn't have the etching on the back (under the tailpiece). Could it be that I was sent one of the
Prewar rings by mistake? It does have HR-30 stamped on the bottom edge.

banjodr - Posted - 03/25/2010:  19:21:35

Some were stamped before he go the gear to etch them he will etch it if you can or want to get it to him

BlueBanjo28 - Posted - 03/26/2010:  04:38:57

I am not taking this one apart. I would rather have it without the etching anyway. This way, someone would have to take it apart to see if it is PW or not.

Fred Frank - Posted - 03/26/2010:  05:58:43

My Jim Mills just had an HR30 installed, but lacks the etching. But, then again, it is also gold plated and engraved. But I'll tell you what, there's no doubt this is not the vintage ring. This thing sound like it aged 60 years in tone. These new rings are some kinda amazing!

I had just received a Ron Block with the HR30, and thought about selling the Mills. Now I'm glad I didn't. Makes it kinda tough to decide which one I want to play. They are both sitting there on stands just begging to be played -- okay, see y'all later.

Dang!!!... It's about time Huber Banjos got around to listing the HR-30 on their website. How long has the HR-30 been sold? A year? By now some other ring is probably the "ring de jour. Great ring nonetheless.
