Never got to see or meet him in person, but love his music. Sincerest condolences to his family.

I was fortunate to play banjo with Jim and Jesse and later Jesse for several years...I couldnt play their music without thinking of the trademark Alan Sheloton licks. Alan was a huge part in shaping their sound. He was also one of the most inovative musicians to pick up a banjo. When Alan played there was no mistaking who it was.. A huge influence on my playing, and a very nice humble man....

Always hate to hear of a great banjo player passing on. May God bless his family.

I agree with everything Kevin Bowen said about Allen. He was a great banjo player and a very nice man. I'll always be appeciative of the time I got to spend with him at a few festivals and shows. I'll miss that big smile he had. As we say here in N.C., he was a good'un. Eric Ellis

I just watched the Peaceful Valley video clip: man, they're all dead but Jesse! A massive, collective loss for Bluegrass...

He was a great influence on my playing. I remember at a bluegrass festival in Laurel, MS (Lonesome Pines) he was put in charge of the banjo workshop. I was the only one that showed up so we talked some, I played Lady of Spain so he could tell me what I needed to change. He said "nothing wrong with that". Nice guy and will be missed by all of his bluegrass family.

In, I think, the summer of 1965 a new country music park opened just west of Columbus, Ohio, and one of the first acts advertised was Jim & Jesse & the Virginia Boys. This was exciting for all the banjo pickers around town because it meant that Allen Shelton was coming and we could see up close just how he did all that wonderful stuff.
Alas, the park's owner/promoter had not dotted all the i's and crossed all the t's, and after we'd waited around for hours while 2nd rate country bands played, we finally left without getting our money back. (The park folded after one summer, and I can't even remember its name.) Turned out he'd never had a contract with J&J and they were booked somewhere else. That was a major disappointment back then, but it pales with the news that Allen has left us for good.

I would like to thank Fred for picking up communication with the immediate family and adding so much to this thread. I had no idea when I spoke to Allen on October 11th that he was in as bad shape as he was. His spirits were good but his voice was coarse and said he just felt weak.
Clarence said that Shirley said that it meant so much to Allen when he heard from so many friends and fans from all over the world after the thread started. Then when he passed how appreciative the family was for all the kind words and support they have received.
Clarence gave me one of the Funeral Home cards and I will try to post it soon.
He said that Eddie Stubbs was a wonderful addition to the services, speaking of Allen's contributions and accomplishments in the music industry as well as being a great humanitarian. We need to thank Eddie for being where he is and doing just that for so many.
Again my thanks to Fred and everyone who took the time to spend a moment in reflection, appreciation or prayer or sent a card or email. They were appreciated.
Its just one more reminder that we need to live each day as if it was our last and if there is something you want to tell someone; don't wait...

Doug,
Thank you for your comments. I'm both honored and thankful that I was able to play a small part in helping out the Shelton family and our greater Bluegrass family by giving back something to the man who gave me one unforgettable memory 41 years ago.

I was writing the story of the 1969 weekend I met Allen when I learned the news of his illness and passing.
The article is now in the June 2010 issue of Bluegrass Unlimited, titled "Memories Of A 1969 Louisiana Bluegrass Weekend".
I consider myself blessed to have met Allen and, in the last year, via email, several of his family members.

Fred, thank you for continuing to keep Allen's memory alive. I've been disappointed that he hasn't been honored more substantially by the print publications since his passing. I really enjoyed your article.
