I've got a $150 banjo (Epiphone MB100) that I want to put some D-tuners on, but I don't want to spend as much on the tuners as I did on the banjo. I don't mind defacing the peghead on this banjo so, anybody have a line on, or a write up on an easy way (simpler than the Scruggs book) to make some, old-fashioned style?

Regardless of what type you decide to use, they are precision parts that I would hesitate to try to make myself. The time and effort one would spend trying to achieve the desired results would be worth more than the price of the tuners themselves. Check out the different styles of "d-tuners" and decide what will suit your needs. Then bite the bullet and lay down the money. Keith tuners can be had used for close to what new cheat-a-keys sell for. Schallers are more economical but seem to be less favored than most.

If you bought a pair of D tuners of which you do not need to deface the peg head, you can take them off in the future to put on a better banjo, and sell the other without the peg head being defaced and not being able to sell. This is really worth considering. I use a pair of Schallers which are no problem at all and work quite well.

I've used Keith type pegs for years, but nothing gives the same sound as cam tuners. I'd buy a set of Sonny's or that other kind of clamp on, if I wanted that sound.

Wish I could remember the name of the tuner accessoriess I got, years ago.
Basically, four fat washers with set screws.
You take apart your tuner, put these on the shaft, put the button back on, and set them to the notes you want. Worked well for me, and didn't cost much.
From an ad in the back of Banjo News Letter, 1976 or so.

Check out the Earl Scruggs banjo book. He details the cam pegs that he made. If you have a hobby shop near by, you can probably find all the parts. And before anyone mentions the metal can he had over the peg head because he messed up the first time....me made a pair that worked, looked good, and are probably still better than anything on the market if he's till got that neck lying around.
