I want to purchase a banjo listed here on the hangout and I`m trying to tally up all the costs involved. I live in Canada and the Banjo is down in the U.S. I know I will have to pay the extra exchange rate, shipping, and I assume Duty. Does anyone know how to find out what and if the Duty would be? Is there anyone here from Canada who has done this? Any insight is appreciated. Man I wish there were some better selection of Banjos up here!!

The import duty for the UK works out about 20%. This does not apply to Canada because of NAFTS (North American Free Trade Agreement) which you are most likely already aware of. All you have to contend with is the exchange rate and postage. Any currency converter website website that gives will give you the exchange rate. In fact I have a currency converter on one of my websites http://www.names4boats.co.uk/Altern...derform.html

You might want to check out Jeff Menzies site, he sells some great banjos and he is in Ontario I believe. http://menziesinstruments.com/catalog/1/banjos

As a Canadian who has purchased many things form outside the country I find it is a crap shoot. Somethings have arrived with no extra charges while others have had up to 50% added on.

Hi
There is no duty On American made banjos thanks to NAFTA. But beware of hidden shipping costs. If you use UPS Fedex etc they add brokerage fees that are often in excess of $100.00 Ask the seller to ship USPS. They charge a flat fee of about $5.00 which is often waived. Also, your purchase is going to sit in customs until they check it out so paying for next day or next business day delivery is not worth it
Hope this helps
Jack

I don`t believe that`s right Goldtopia, even when we just go across the border for a day or two you are only allowed very little and very specific amounts to bring back. I have never tryed shipping anything tho and never of this kind of value. I think even if I were in the states for more than a week your still only allowed like 500 duty free and some booze and smokes. If anyone else has shipped please chime in.

You may not pay import duty, but based on what my Canadian brother tells me you will pay provincial tax etc. just as you would on any local purchase.

Thanks Jack, I guess shipping goods is different than going down and purchasing.

GST and PST will be charged. For duties on non-US made banjos simply call the customs office and they'll tell you. If it's a used banjo then duties usually do not apply. As was mentioned already, brokerage fees from folks like UPS can be excessive. If the banjo was made in the U.S. tell your seller to clearly mark it as such on the paper: Made in U.S.A. The $500 etc. import limit does not apply as you're paying the taxes properly anyways.
You didn't say what part of Canada you're in but if you're ever in Toronto you should check out Twelfth Fret, they have quite a selection. Also check BHO's Canadian member pages, maybe somebody up here has a banjo for sale that might interest you...

My experience is this: You will pay GST on the declared value (after exchange), plus whatever shipping costs are involved. As has been pointed out by others, on American-made items there is no duty, on account of NAFTA. UPS charges high brokerage fees; so go with the postal service or one of the other couriers. For small orders Canada Post is spotty about charging GST and their $5 fee, but I imagine they would be diligent with a banjo worth a couple of thousand dollars.

I did not know about the $500 limit. If there is no charge for a banjo that is used. Then all you have to do is play it for half an hour or more and it becomes used. Though this would have to be agreed with the seller. Just as thought.

Thanks for all the insight I think I know what to do now, and today the weather in Winnipeg SUCKS! but not complaining as a month from now it will probably really SUCK!! But I`m used to it just wish there was more variety of good banjos in these parts, the one I have my eye on in the classifieds seems like a good deal if it doesn`t cost to much for exchange rates, shipping etc...

I paid 7% duty on my Prucha (Czech product bought from Montana) in addition to shipping, customs brokerage fee and GST.

if you use USPS, I'd strongly suggest you have it shipped "registered" and insured. it's the only way they can really track a package because someone has to sign for it every time it changes hands.

I have a Fitch Palomino. Go for it there are two versions. The Tony Pass woody which weighs 8lbs which I bought (see website) and has a nice tone, or the same but with a nitro tone ring which weighs 10.8 lbs.
