There are a bunch of great used ones available in the classifieds. I know when I got mine a few months ago people were recommending used because you get more for your buck.

My suggestionm would be a Stelling, first choice. Second choice would be Sullivan. I've been reading a lot of good stuff on the Yates, as well...any of those would be a great jo in that range...

i'll toss in my vote for a nechville. tons of tone and innovating design. i love my nechville.

I like the Deering brand also, probably because I own a Deering.

I agree with mountiepicker. Used is usually a good deal, but.... I like to try before I buy, so unless the seller lives in my neck of the woods, I'd be hesitant. $3,500 worth.

Good luck, I can't wait to hear more inquiries.

Nechville Vintage.... wow.

Stelling Red Fox. Played one at Mandolin Bros. in Staten Island, NY and just loved it. Wish I was in the market, but that's definitely the place to go if you want to be able to try all the best makers under one roof. They have a black diamond as well.

Good luck!

Matt

I bought one in that price range, but chose a 1927 archtop conversion. Were I buying new, I'd have saved another $500 or so and bought a Huber.

Make a grocery "wish" list of all the features that you expect to get. Start window shopping (free, as far as I know) and be ready to pounce on the deal.
I buy shotguns that way.

We do not know where we are going.
Nor do most of us care.
For us, it is enough that we are on our way.

Absolutely. Go see Arthur. For that money, you can get a Hatfield customized to your exact specs. The banjo will be everything you want and leave you with some change left over to boot.

Stelling, and you wan't be sorry.

In mahogany banjos, I think I would go for a Huber Lancaster.

The Yates Ron Stewart model is also an excellent choice.

There are lots of great choices.Road test as many as possible.

The only way to pick out a banjo is to sit down and try them. Some banjo's I thought I would love turned out to be duds in the sound and neck department, but I must say that on my last trip to Toronto Canada I was fortunate to try out the whole Huber line at the Twelfth Fret Store and I fell deeply in love with the Huber Berkshire . Man what a sound and the neck was to die for. That is most definitely my next purchase. I am going down in October and if it is still there I am bringing it home with me.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Robert.

I second the Burlile powered Fitch that is for sale, or anything Arthur Hatfield puts his name on.

There are so many good ones in this price range. I prefer Sullivan but that is my preference and only after a great deal of searching. My advice is to not be in a hurry; play as many as you can and listen to as many as you can. There are some fairly good stores in your area that carry a decent selection of banjos. The one that I have experience with is Picker's Supply in Fredericksburg. Go to jams where you can see and here other banjos and, perhaps, even get to play one of them. Don't be in a hurry ...... the right one will find you.

Lot's of great choices once you hit that price range.
My completely biased opinion of course would be a mahogany 75 clone from Frank Neat.

I'd like to own one from each builder.

I perfectly happy with my Cox and Gibson/Cox.

Enviroguy - Posted - 09/29/2009:  12:50:36

I have a great prewar Gibson; if I was adding to my collection, I'd consider a Nechville (one with an arched fretboard- I forget the model name) or anything with a Burlile ring. That Fitch sounds interesting. I can't help also noticing the great recorded sound of Hubers (www.huber.com) but the one I tried didn't exactly blow me away. It might have been in the setup though.
Good luck. Try everything you can.

Each manufacturer has a different offering and in some cases many different offerings. You have the fun job of researching what is available and what you prefer. And even in this time of automation, I believe you can find substantial variation in 2 banjos of the same model.

You won't do better than this one:
http://www.banjohangout.org/forum/t...IC_ID=158242
I have no financial interest in this but this banjo at $3500 is better than one made by another maker at $6500 (I know cause I owned one of the $6500 banjos and I have played a few of Cliff's; too bad for me he got out of the custom business, I guess.)

I own a Fitch "Masters Five" and love it. I think Cliff has one for sale. You wont find a nicer guy to deal with!

Enjoy the journey!

you could get,,, like a hundred squared ells fot that much,,,,,,, just saying ,,,ya know

pickNgrin - Posted - 09/30/2009:  04:22:16

Well... that certainly narrows it down to every banjo in that price range (and a few beyond)! Haw haw. Good luck in your search... I am hoping to be in your position myself in the very near future. The advice to "play the one you're gonna buy" is good... but if you are a beginner maybe it is a little limiting because you can't really put it through its paces. If that is the case you could take a banjo pickin' friend with you. You could also travel to a show like IBMA or SPBGMA where there will be lots of different banjos on display and tons of top-notch pickers who you could ask to play (before your very ears) the exact banjo you want buy.

Another way to look at it is.... don't worry! In that range you're not going to get a bad one. Every banjo listed so far is awesome. Good luck!

But to be fair, there are lots of fine instruments in this price range.....I'm partial to the Kel Kroydon line. Very fine instruments constructed with Robin Smith. They have several (at least) ready for shipping in this price range.

There is a Hatfield Buck Creek in classifieds for a really great price. In my opinion Arthur builds one heck of a banjo and is a fine man to boot!

Cheers!

You don't need to spend 3500 to get a fine banjo that you'll be happy with for the rest of your life.
