yesterday i went in to a music shop in the town were i live, I had my banjo with me
i wanted to get some stings for my guitar, the guy sew i had a Deering banjo and he asked me could he have a look at it, he was thinking of geting some in, i got my GDL out of the case and gave it to him, he was on the other side of the counter as he was looking at it the back of the neck hit the side of the counter, i didn't say anything about it at the time but when i got home i had a look at it, there is a little mark on the back of the neck, its not big enough for a ripair, but big enough to P me off, i phoned the guy this morning and told him about it, he did say sorry but that's all, i know i cant keep my pride and joy perfect for ever but you'd have thought it would be safe in the hand's of a guy that own's a music shop, what would he have done if i'd done the same thing with one of his top end Gibson guitar's. the moral of this story is dont let anybody touch your banjo.

all the best

I'd be po'ed too but unless its a repairable gash or break best to let it go. The guy should probably learn how to handle instruments a little better but accidents happen.

Oh, if only someone could wave a magic wand over the vowels, so that, instead of getting pEEd, you could get pAId.

Where's that Potter kid when he's REALLY needed?

In the wonderful world of Revenge Fantasy, there is the scene where you visit the shop, and ask to try out one of his guitars.
And when you sit on the chair and place the guitar in playing position, a shrug of your shoulders causes your soft lamb's wool vest to flop open, revealing your custom-made Diamond Abrasive belt buckle!

Imagining it is, in fact, a lot more fun than doing it.

I use to take lessons from an old guy. I showed up with my brand new $1900 banjo and he asked to see it. I told him one of the RR tacks was set a little low and that the string wouldn't go underneath it. Before I could do anything, he took out a pair of small wire cutters and and forced them under the tack and pried it up and totally gouged the fret board!!!

I feel your pain!

why do we feel like this, it was an accident, but i felt so mad this morning. talking about car's i drive a 14 year old Toyota Celica wich is in mint con, not a mark on it, one day i parked it in an empty car park, an old lady driving an old morris minor came in to the car park, she had a hundred space's to put her car, but what did she do, yes, put it next to my car, and yes she hit it, you have to see the funny side of it.

Three and a half years ago, I was building my "The Hollywood" banjo while I was dating my wife to be. I had just finished inlaying the dogwood flower in the resonator, and had it laying on the floor next to the couch. She came over on "THAT SUNDAY", as I affectionatly call it now, and we watched tv. When she got up to leave, she dropped her car keys on the resonator... I still have the dent in it... and Yes I still married her!

"The Worst Dent is the First" is a song waiting to be written!

I don't know, guys. I kind of like some dents and scratches on my instruments. I don't mean wood gouged out or anything, but a little "character" never hurt anybody. Twisting, warping, bending, and breaking is another thing, of course.

If I ever get a new one,I think I'll just drag it around the driveway behind my lawnmower so I don't have to obsess about the looks.
The Yates banjos can have different degrees of distressness.I think that's a good idea.

"The first cut is the deepest".....Rod Stewart was it?.....fairly close anyway.
Think of it as giving the banjo character......I have an old 1890s banjo with bundles of character......check out the neck break....photos on my home page.

Fender (and apparently some others) are selling NEW instruments they BOAST of as looking "road weary".

Apparently, we are becoming so (obscenity deleted) lazy, that we now hire other people to wear out our instruments, ON the assembly line, AT the factory!

Yes, Rod Stewart recorded it - but it was Cat Stevens who wrote and first recorded it.

A friend of mine is a phenomenal guitar player and had just bought a $5,000 Martin guitar that he'd been saving for for a very long time. First time out with it his strap popped loose and it hit the ground on the lower bout.

I thought he was going to cry. Turned out it just scuffed it a bit. That Martin is now a road worn work horse and that scuff is a distant memory. It now looks like it has been a working man's guitar and I know he wouldn't trade it for a new one just like it.

Put a piece of duct tape over it. Problem solved.

I'm always happy to get that first dent behind me so I can stop worrying about it.

The problem is you didn't do it. When you are the one who dings your instrument you can't be mad at anybody but yourself. A couple of weeks ago I was practicing my banjo at about 5:00 in the morning. I was in my home office sitting at the computer using a slow me down program on a Scruggs tune. I went to put my banjo in the case and hit the back of the resonator against the slide out keyboard drawers. I put a little ding in it. I've had the banjo since 1994 and this is really the fist ding. Oh I was upset. It's just a little bitty mark, but it's my Gibson RB3!
