Hey I went to camp and was taught one claw hammer style song with doule C tuning... and I was wondering where I could get some more music in that tuning. I like the sound of it. :-) Oh also does anyone know what the chords are in that tuning (or are there any)? Thanks so much.
HH

I would love to say that Twang is my middle name, but since it isn't I just wish it were, as that would truly be me. :-)

Double C is one of the most popular clawhammer tunings, especially for traditional fiddle tunes. Almost any clawhammer banjo tune book would have plenty of Double C tunes for you to choose from - for instance, Dan Levenson's "Old Time Festival Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo", which is one of my favorite resources. A few songs that I play in Double C are "Soldier's Joy", "Turkey in the Straw", "Liberty", "Mississippi Sawyer", "Angeline the Baker", "Over the Waterfall", "Jaybird", "Year of Jubilo", and, well, many others.

The Hangout tab archive allows you to search by tuning: http://www.banjohangout.org/tab/ (although that feature is still being tested, so it might not be completely up and running yet).

If that doesn't get you many results, just search for the tab for the songs listed above (and others that will no doubt be suggested) - you'll almost certainly find some in Double C.

As for chords, C, F, and G7 would probably cover most things. C is first string, second fret. F is first string, third fret and third string, second fret. G7 is first string, third fret and second string, second fret (third string, fourth fret optional). Maybe throw in Bflat, too, which is first string, third fret and second string, second fret and third string, third fret.

Most clawhammer books are in double C. Usually each tune also shows what each string is at the lirst line of the tab. Ken Perlman,Mary Z. Cox, etc.

If you look around, you can find chord charts for it also.

The benefit of the new tuning is the sound.
The cost of it is that you have to learn all new chords.

Some say a benefit is learning the neck better but I find that to be true _only_ when someone can translate from one tuning to another, i.e., play the same song in the same key in different tunings. Otherwise, you're just learning a new neck. I think the cost of that is higher than the quikc and inconsequential payoff of ease of fingering in new tunings is.

It contains 47 tunes and the majority are in gCGCD, with a sprinkling in other tunings like fCFCD, gDGCD, etc.

You will also find about 15 tunes in Double C tuning in Rocket Science Banjo The free ebook. You can even compare a couple tunes like Jesse James and Columbus Stockade Blues as they are written out in both G tuning and Double C. Go to the website below and download your copy today. It is, as I said free. If you don't have it you will need the TEFView software from Tabledit - It is also free and there is a link directly to the website from mine.
