Thanks for the kind words and encouragement, folks. You humble me!
No, I'm not doin' this for fame or fortune, but I AM living out a dream; to go, see and commune with these great banjo builders! And I'm more'n happy to have people come along (it's certainly more fun). Besides, I can't help myself! So I'm doin' this because I can... and I want to. And I'm thrilled you want to join in.
I have to admit, I LOVE community. The more we can make of it, the more we can draw each other together, the better for all of us. Whether it's banjos, autism or ??, we need to be reminded that we have much in common with each other, more to appreciate than divide. And in drawing together to share, there's strength... enormous strength (and encouragement).

There's a new book out by Dr. Mehmet Oz called Blue Zones. It's about places around the globe where people live to ripe old age (upwards of 100 YO). The book highlights the commonalities. There are two in particular that caught my eye. Beyond a constant "motivation/purpose for being" there's COMMUNITY. These folks delight in meeting with others (family and beyond) for a daily decompression... and it apparently suits them. It's certainly better than sitting silent, watching mindless television. Well, that community is kinda what we got here at BHO.
The older I get, the more I appreciate the people in the farming communities of my youth (northwest Iowa). These forums would be the next best thing.
Thanks for being a part of BHO, folks. You're making this place the COMMUNITY we all need to help us be better human beings.

Thanks, and by the way I enjoyed the last one, and right after it was over I watched a tv show about the place he used to live, Arcata california. Not sure how to spell. It was called Pot city USA, what a coincidence

Ok! We got a show to announce!

Mr. Brooks Masten is up for takin' us all on a tour of his shop... and more! I didn't ask him, but I don't think he'd mind me sharing what else he has in store for us. Here's an excerpt from his email:
quote: Hi Craig, So far I plan to do a segment on stretching and maintaining a skinhead, since I get alot of questions about that. I will also do a segment on old silverspun rims and the different ways different makers made them. I have a small arsenal of them. And I also have a show and tell planned, showing the old banjos I own that have inspired my ideas in making banjos thus far.
I'll try and get Earl White in here to play some tunes with me. I will have some unexpected commercial breaks from "our sponsers" and maybe even a circus act in the driveway at some point. Ridiculous phony jigs will appear along the way, etc... Along with the real jigs of course. Brooks
Wow! Are you jazzed about this? I am! So put this on your calendars (*corrected 11/2*): BROOKS MASTEN WEBINAR, WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 11TH, 7P CST Watch it live at: WWW.LIVESTREAM.COM/FRAILINFLIXI hope his circus has some ball-balancing seals. I like that act. Or maybe an organ grinder with a monkey. Oh! One more thing... I almost forgot thinkin' of monkeys and all... Brooks wants to know what other questions you might have that he can address. It's ok to list them in this thread as both of us will be reading it before the show. Or, you can save it and send it in via chat during the Webinar. Surprises are usually more fun that way. ------------------- "Gospel. Thanks for bringing us an intimate look into banjo-building by the various craftsmen. It is amazing to see the personal uniqueness being imparted into these instruments. It is almost beyond expectation to have a banjo built with custom-made hardware, as Brooks does in his small, but efficient shop. I'll be looking forward to the rest of the series to see what ideas other builders have dreamed up. Thanks again, Craig; you have provided us with further knowledge as well as entertainment.

Craig, Thanks! I didn't get to watch Brooks live, but managed to catch the archive last night. What a kick! For anybody who wonders, I can attest to the quality and beauty of Brooks' instruments. Here's some pics... http://www.banjohangout.org/myhango...asp?id=11255

Wow! Was THAT fun!

Tom makes an extraordinary banjo... and thanks to that front-row-seat tour, now you know why! Having Barry St. Mane (another BHO member) there to play those beauties at the end was just icing on the cake. Thanks Tom and Barry!

Here's a link to the Nechville Banjo show we just finished. Thanks guys (and gals) for your interactive chat!

What fun! Thanks for watching!

Ok, then! It's Ome coming up...
Wednesday (12/9) at 8P CST. That's an hour later than usual.
Same place as always: www.livestream.com/frailinflix

Due to some technological limitations, we won't be able to see the the back of the shop THIS time (wi-fi won't carry that far), so we'll plan that for the future. HOwEVEr! What Chuck and Tanya have in mind will probably quickly take your mind off what the shop looks like. We're going to be talking about some upcoming Special Edition Ome banjos... and the 50 anniversary issues due NEXT year.
This is gonna be good!

See you Wednesday night.

Hi Everyone!
Chuck Ogsbury, a.k.a. Ome Banjos' boss, will be talking on the Banjo Builders' Webinars tomorrow, 9 pm EST. He'll talk about how he got into this business - now 50 years! - and might give a few previews of new banjo models.
See you soon!

Oh that was just the best evening I've had in a while. I love my OME and I love those Ogsburys! Just plumb warm and fuzzy, it was :-) Such great stories and such a history. Craig, I just can't thank you enough.

Thank you Chuck. Thank you Tanya. It's great to hear validation from the creator of my integrated-tone-ring Jubilee that it's one of his favorites too. Thank you Craig for doing this series. I know it's a lot of work, but you look like you're having fun. And it sure is fun for many of us hanger-outers.
GSCarson - Posted - 12/10/2009: 06:28:34
Thanks Craig for putting this together and hosting, very enjoyable. Chuck and Tanya are really great folks. It was fun to hear Chuck talk about the old days, and he barely scratched the surface of all of the special banjos and inovations he's done over the years. OME has a few more really unusual and special one off banjos coming for the 50th that he didn't even get into last night. 2010 should be a special year for OME banjos, and thanks again for the series.

I'm watching the recorded version now. Interesting that the engraving was done by a guy from Crockett Bits & Spurs. Don't know how many of you know it, but Crockett merchandise has become pretty collectible but is still much in use by working cowboys as well. I'm sorta astounded to think my set of 1953 Crockett spurs have a roundabout kinship to my 1998 Ome.

i think two builders who would be cool to see in your series would be greg galbreath of buckeye banjos and jeff delfield of deep creek strings.

Hey Troy. I contacted Greg. He'd like to but is limited by technology. I've also decided tonight's show is the last one I'm going to do for a while. Might pick it up again sometime in the future, though. Craig

For unknown reasons, the sound dropped out of Bob Flesher's webinar tonight around 5 minutes in. It just as mysteriously came back about 10 minutes in. Dunno. But it's worth waiting it out. His discussion of necks was superb.
