I've seen ads for a fifth string capo that says it does not require drilling and does not attach permanently to the banjo. The picture looks like it is small enough to not get in the way while playing?

Are these any good? How would they compare to using spikes?

Are you talking about the Regan (or is Reagan) capo? I know some folks use it and like it, but I have spikes. The only draw back I would see is that it's one more thing to keep track of when your playing -- spikes are always there ready to go when you need them.

I use the Reagan fifth string capo and also have spikes and I prefer the capo.Sometimes they are a inconvenient but you don't have to retune your fifth string as you do with the spikes...

I use Earl's suspenders, see at www.jdmc.com , works well and is out of way of fingers.

Had one of those. Was rather fiddly. Replaced it with this: http://www.thesuspendercapo.com/ - much happier.

I agree with Dan but I do use one of these Reagan 5th String Brass Capos on my old banjo that I don't want to put spikes into. I believe you can get them from Janet Davis. I think they work very well but I hear they are easy to loose. Mine doesn't leave the house because my RB00 doesn't either. I have spikes on my other banjo and they are actually easier to manage.

After messing around with a variety of removable 5th-string capos and not wanting to drill into my banjo-neck to install a permanent one, I've decided to just retune the 5th string whenever I put on my capo. It's not that big a deal, really -- the 5th string usually only goes up or down a step. I group my tunes by tuning, so it's not that big a deal to make the change.

If you use the Reagan capo just wear a shirt with a front pocket. It works fine.If you over tighten it might bite your string in two so dont over do it.

I've used both the Reagan and Earl's Suspender, and prefer the Suspender. It goes on very quickly and easily, comes off even quicker, and has never given me a moment's bother.

I never heard of the suspender capo. I had spikes on my previous banjo and liked them, though retuning was a nuisance. I've been putting off trusting someone to drill holes in my current banjo and have been looking around for alternatives.

Does the suspender capo scratch the finish on the neck?

Doesn't it get in the way of your hand as you move up and down the neck? When going up the neck I run my thumb along the back of the neck as a sort of anchor so my hand doesn't change position relative to the strings. That looks like it would be in the way. Or is it low enough profile to avoid that?

My first thought on seeing an ad for the Reagan capo was that I'd probably lose it.

How much risk is there in a competent guitar repair man with minimal banjo experience putting in spikes? That seems to be my only other option right now.

I had a great Aunt who wore suspenders. She used them to keep her stockings up.

Looks like you are a fan of them, too, Bill!

I have the Reagan and I like it though it is more convenient to use the spikes that are on my banjo. I usually back the Reagan away from the fret a millimeter or so. That way it doesn't click on the fret when I'm playing.

If spikes are done right you should not have to retune.

Those are called "Garters" over here, Bill. What we call suspenders, are known as braces 'round your way.

I'll never play like Earl Scruggs or sing like Luciano Pavarotti, but I'll pick better than Luciano and sing tenor better than Earl

Check in the building and setup section of the BHO today. A member describes making a removable 5th string capo by cutting down a guitar bridge pin.

Thanks. I just read the thread about using the bridge pin and it sounds very doable. I will definitely give that a try before letting someone drill on my beloved banjo.
