Hi Eric, I just tried to 'rate' one of the tabs on the site but it wouldn't let me - it said web page unavailable. Cheers, Martin

Now we just need to get the "historic" tabs to have more data associated with them, so those filters do some good. We'll get the tab team together soon!

The search doesn't seem to work at all if you select the difficulty levels, other than the all difficulty levels, I tried a couple of times, setting most to the default selection, but it doesn't generate any results.

That's because the old tabs haven't been entered into the new system--giving a tab a difficulty level, tuning, genre, etc is optional, you see!
Hopefully once we get the tab team going, they can go in and update existing tabs.

Hi Eric - I love the ability to upload tabs! Just did my first one in PDF format. Got this page:

Hi Eric, you only have two possible tunings listed in the drop down box - regular and Gm. Any chance of any more?
Martin
PS excellent work, by the way!

Yeah--I need to figure out what I should do with that tunings list. Because there are hundreds of possible tunings out there...but I probably don't want to list that many. Any ideas?

Also--we fixed the bug that Greg mentioned above.

The tuning is important information for the Old-Time society. It is important to be able to search for a special tuning. I agree that we cav't have hundreds of different tunings, but I think we can chose the ten most common tunings and than have a category for "other tunings". You should also avoid to list "capoed tunings". The G tuning (gDGBD) and A tuning (aEAC#E) should be the same. From my experience I think these are the eight most common tunings: G-tuning gDGBD and its equivalent G minor tuning: gDGBbD Standard C tuning: gCGBD (often tuned up a full tone to D Double C:gCGCD and its equivalent double D tuning. Also eCGCD can fall under this category. Open C tuning: gCGCE or its equivalent D tuning Old F: fCFCD and Old G (gDGDE) Open D: f#DF#AD (also aDF#AD in this category). Mountain Minor or G modal: gDGCD or its equivalent A tuning (aEADE) . Jan-Olov

Just tried to download a TABLEDIT format file. It didn't download; rather, it opened as html in my browser. I'm using a Macbook. This problem did not occur with the old version of hangout.

I might have missed something here but I used to look for tab posted by specific authors but now they all, or nearly all, say posted by Schlange. How can I find my favourite tab posters please Eric?

I just posted a verbal description of Tommy Jarrell's "Frankie and Johnny", which he taught me in 1973. I don't know how to do tabs, and don't know what you mean when you say I "must post a file in order for the tab to be visible to the public". I thought I just "posted" it by "saving" it.

Hello Eric - I would very much like to uncover any TABs that may have been posted for the Tenor Banjo, specifically an Irish tune (GDAE). However, the TAB archive does not have a selection for me to query in this manner. Can you help? I am sure that if this selection were made available, and if you were then to notify those in the Irish Tenor forum for instance, that tenor players would then begin uploading these as well (over and above what 5-string players have been uploading). Thank you kindly.

I'll do even better--I added Standard, Irish, AND Chicago tenor tuning to the list! Which Irish tenor forum are you talking about? If any of you tenor players want to help spread the word so we can get more tenor tabs, that would be great!

Eric - I was referring to the Forum entitled "Playing Advice: 4-String". I see that you've already set up this ability for 4-string uploads/queries, and also advised those in that forum. It'll be interesting to see how many people begin uploading. Thanks!

Eric,
Is there a way to search for postings of tabs by specific people? I would like to be able to point my banjo students to my tabs, for example, but I can't find a way to do so. Ditto for Jack Baker's tabs.
Thanks,

Hi - I love the new format, I think it is going to be a lot more useful.
Question: If a link is broken, where should we report it?
The link for "Little Darlin Pal of Mine" points to a geocities website which is no longer there.
Keep up the good work!

When we view the tab archives we see the name of the song but not who did the arrangement, so it's difficult to select the song version you want unless it's downloaded and viewed, then you can see who did the arrangement. Under the old tab system, the author of the tab could be directly viewed. Any way to fix this easily?

For safari, pull up your downloads window, then click on the Tabledit link, hold it, and drag it into the downloads box. Let go, & it'll start downloading. I had the same problem of the tab opening in the browser and just being computer language.

Brennen,
Thanks for the tip. I would still like to see the one-button solution restored if possible in Safari. It just boggles me how something that worked before the upgrade doesn't work afterward.

I admit that I'm dense, but the tab files have .tef extensions and I have no idea what type of file this is and how can I see it?? What is this file format? Thanks.
Jim
banjo_brad - Posted - 11/16/2009: 14:38:51
Jim-
The .tef files are made in Tabledit and require either the full (demo) program or the free TEFview program that can be obtained from the Tabledit website.
Once downloaded and installed on your computer, download the desired tef file and open it in the viewer or program.

Can you please split the Genres up little more? Celtic/Irish/Fiddle ? Can you please add Reno to "Playing Styles"?
larrytanner - Posted - 11/30/2009: 14:20:37
Eric,
I think this was asked once before, but I didn't see an answer. Could you add a search by who posted the transcription? The transcriptions by JBaker are excellent and I would like to quickly search for his stuff and weed out the filler by you know who, if possible.
Thanks, Larry
bigcraig - Posted - 11/30/2009: 15:37:54
I was just going to ask the same as has been mentioned several times - any plans to have a search by author? There are some members now adding a lot of new stuff to the archive and it would be very useful to find tabs by the same author if you like their work.
schlange - Posted - 11/30/2009: 16:51:59
Yes, we'll be letting you search by poster soon.
larrytanner - Posted - 12/01/2009: 05:26:08
The ability to exclude a poster would be great too. If we could exclude the one guy who is posting a lot of filler, we could get to the "good stuff".
larrytanner - Posted - 12/02/2009: 13:58:47
Is there a way to update a tab you have already posted?
MickG - Posted - 12/02/2009: 15:51:46
Having posted, deleted, updated a number of tabs, I now have the following comments
First let me say that I've tried all the features relating to tab uploads and maintenance, and everything seems to work perfectly, so Kudos!
Related to tab updating: One method is to simply delete an existing tab and upload a new one. This method deletes the comments and ratings that might have accumulated for the tab, which is what might be desired if the new tab is a major revision and warrants new evaluation. A second method is to click on the pencil icon to edit a tab. Then just delete the Tab file listed for the tab entry and upload the new Tab file. This preserves the comments and ratings that might have acculated, which is what might be desired if the new tab is basically the same as the old with just minor corrections, etc.
Some general comments: A convenient feature might be to be able to manage accumulated comments/ratings for a tab. Then a tab could be updated and if comments/ratings no longer apply, they could be deleted without having to delete the entire tab as noted above. One thing I thougt might be useful for a tab is a PDF file of the tab and an mp3 audio file (in addition to the tab file itself). Then someone who doesn't have a tab editor could use the PDF and audio file to learn. Also, those who don't like tab and learn only by ear could use the mp3 audio file which could be put into a slow-downer, etc. The problem now with this approach is that for some reason the mp3 file shows up twice in the tab listing (only a confusion factor) and also gets put into a member's audio archive. It would be nice if an mp3 posted for a tab could be separate from the audio archive. The formatting of tab listings is inconsistent and needs some work. Ratings for tabs doesn't seem to be working.

Guitar Pro version 5 is out now, so need to add .gp5 to the permissable file-type uploads.

You can now view a list of a member's tabs by clicking the "Tabs" link from that member's homepage (up at the top-left where the links to Music, Photos, etc are).

Hi Eric,
Where is one supposed to find the software to open these various tab files? It's a great idea to have all of this tab, but if you can't read it, what good is it? And how many pieces of software does one need to read all of these different extensions?
It would be helpful if there were instructions right at the top of the page, above the search.
I've tried to download something several times, and it's not happening because the downloads need the correct software in order to be read/opened.
Thanks,
Rockyjo

When editing a tab entry:
One feature that used to work OK no longer works. You now cannot delete a tab component file. For instance I wanted to update the TablEdit file for Polka on a Banjo. When I tried to delete the old file, I got an error message. Deleting the entire tab works, but you cannot delete an individual file for the tab (TablEdit, mp3, etc.)

Praise the Lord, I love this site, all the new tabs and being able to play along with them, thanks you so much.......... My only question for now is ,,,, is there a way to have the cords appear on the tab as well??? it just helps me in knowing where the cord changes are.. thanks again.
larrytanner - Posted - 01/28/2010: 07:01:50
Chords will appear only if the transcriber adds them. Sometimes they are only in the notation, sometimes in the tab and sometimes they just are not there at all. :-(

what gives?

Could you put in a filter by date? With all the new tabs being posted lately, if I miss a few days, the newest tabs page may not contain all the tabs that have been posted since my last visit.
Thanks, Scott

Eric, Is there a way to list All Tenor CGDA songs, tabs, etc.....?? I know there are not too many...... I was able to get Palo's Bill Bailey, so specific title is ok, but not many other titles are found by the guess method ... I am sure that the Hit rate is super for 5-string by title... Great Site..... Thanks, Ed D
