The Gong Show was interesting to say the least. Are there any videos out there on You Tube that show contestants playing the banjo on that show? I have seen videos of Steve Martin playing the banjo on the program. As I recall, there were some very good banjo pickers that appeared on that program, and were not big names.

The plectrum banjoist Kurt Abell was on the Gong Show where he appeared as a Dracula figure named Count Banjola who played the banjo with his cape suspended from his shoulders while hanging upside down like a bat. --Cjazz

I played back up for a gal that sung Rocky Top. She won but it never aired so she never got the money.

Man that brings back memories. I played Jean Jean the Dancing Machine when my class did the Gong Show for the talent show.

Remember the "Whistling Belly Button" guy? That was creative, in a weird way.

Hi, Clay-- Thanks for the underestimation on the age; you must be one of the many who think a wife like mine would never have anything to do with a budding geezer like me. I hope to get a chance to do a little pickin' on the square before the season is over. My kids promised to help me post this Gong Show thing at some point in the future (whenever that is). Until then, Clay, I can try to bring my computer and DVD along some time to the Saturday pickin' or something, when I am up to the degradation. I did note, however, on the YouTube sight that I still need permission to post this and to that end, I opened a MySpace Account and sent a note to Chuck Barris asking for his permission. I don't know if he still owns the rights, but if not, he can probably tell me who does, if he evens gets the note. Regards, Randy in Germantown, TN "This stuff ain"t rocket surgery!"

Clay- I will probably be picking at the Elks Lodge tomorrow night! I might sneak over to the village though.
At the intersection at the village, Carriage House Drive is just across the by-pass if you can figure out how to get over there. You will have to make a u-turn on the by-pass. Follow Carriage House and cross Highland Avenue. You will see a La Quinta Inn on the left. The Lodge is just behind La Quinta. www.bobbythompsonbanjo.com

Ohhhhh...so, the Elks Lodge is where the elite pickers gather, huh?
which explains why no one ever told me Hope to see you tomorrow, Ronnie - hugs & hellos to Emily :-) clay

I don't know how elite we are, but don't expect a lot of bluegrass!! It is our own little jam. We play Southern Rock and some old John Prine, Beatles tunes, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, and whatever comes to mind. We are working up some John Hartford songs, though. Oh, if you like Cajun food, the chef is cooking up some jambalaya tomorrow night. . Bring two $3 bills for each plate.

This is all great stuff. Does anyone else know who else has picked the banjo on the Gong Show?
I remember the face of one guy in particular. He played for the judges and audience without getting a score. I can't remember the tune that he played, but I do remember that it had some harmonics in it. If I had a picture, I'd post it. Can anyone help me out?

I don't remember WHO they were, but one guy played piano, and the banjo player hung by his knees from a trapeze.
And when they finished, somebody on gthe panel said "I have an OVERWHELMING desire to go get a pizza!!"
(Anybody else remember the singalongs at SHAKEY'S?)

Wesley, the guy played foggy mountain chimes. I haven't a clue who he was, but it was a smooth rendition. I also remember the guy from "Lost in Space"...Billy Mumy I think is his name, played banjo on the show one time.....don't recall what he song he did, though.

Okay, gang, it has been a long time coming (some will say not long enough, I am sure), but I finally got my Gong Show appearance from 1978 up and running on YouTube tonight. Our part of the show ran about 2 minutes and 15 seconds, but there is another couple of minutes of trophy awarding and utter non-sense if you hang with it beyond that first 2:15. I was a 22-year old college senior majoring in biology at the time, so don't be too harsh about the lack of pro skills as a picker. Here you go:

Hi, Jim-- The trophy on the show was a real trophy but it was a prop. The Trophy Shoppe in Burbank made the actual trophies and sent them out to the winners when they were engraved. We called and asked them to make two and paid for the second one out of our winnings, so we could both have one. Regards, Randy in Germantown, TN

'Glad you enjoyed it, Wes, and thanks for asking about this in the first place. I have mentioned this moment in my life a time or two in the past here in other contexts, but I only just got the capability to post the actual show to YouTube. It was truly a hoot! The best part of the show was the audition. It was like an oldtime movie. As you sat waiting to see Chuck you could watch dog acts, clowns, tap dancers...It was wild.

You are welcome Randy. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too.
Does anyone else remember the guy who played Foggy Mountain Chimes on the Gong Show? Is there any video out there of him pickin then? He was awesome. As I recall, he had a smile on his face while he picked the tune. It seemed to me that he enjoyed pickin for the audience, which is awesome too.
