I just bought a new Ron Block Huber from Jeff at Acoustic Vibes Music in Arizona. First of all, I'm absolutely in love with this new banjo. I wasn't too sure on how well I was going to like the color, but in person, this banjo is beautiful. The parts, fit, finish, etc. are probably as close to flawless as you could get. The sound, however, it simply amazing! The tone is fat, well-rounded, full, rich, complex and just what I was hoping it would be! I've listened to so many sound files and samples of Huber banjos and I was hoping the banjo would sound half as good. It exceeded my expectations and my hopes. It's just a flat out awesome banjo! It has a big tone that doesn't die up the neck. The volume is great. The banjo is also incredibly responsive to changes in the picking style. I found when I really dug in, the pronounced increase in the volume was more than I expected. It was like jumping on a horse and having it take off galloping! Very, very powerful banjo!
I also can't say enough good things about Jeff at Acoustic Vibes. He made buying this banjo an absolute pleasure. It couldn't have been easier unless he gave it to me for free. But I'll tell you what he did give me for free - free Express shipping. I had the banjo at my house in two days for free! He even threw in some strings! I'd certainly recommend anybody interested in a quality acoustic instrument to check them out at www.acousticvibesmusic.com.
Ok, back to picking!

The Huber Ron Block banjo is a great looking banjo! I always like a correctly shaped fiddle shaped headstock. Play the snot out of it!

Congrats on your new banjo. I've been thinking about a maple Huber but I just can't get away from the mahogany wood sound. Maybe one day. Hubers are my favorite banjo by far.
Practice makes "better".

Jim, I've bought two banjos from Jeff at Acoustic Vibes music. I concur with you wholeheartedly. Jeff is a very nice person to work with. He is extremely fair - at least with me. Terry Treppa

I traded some banjos and purchased a Huber Jim Mills banjo. I love the Huber and Jeff from Acoustic Vibes was great to deal with.

Congratulations on the new Huber! Those Ron Block models are incredible, but then again, I feel that way about pretty much every Huber I've played. I love my Huber Berkshire and my Huber VRB-G.

Thanks guys. It's been like Christmas morning over here since the banjo arrived. Forrest, I'm actually thinking about getting a Berkshire model from Steve. I know that's pretty much the same banjo as the Block, but I guess that's part of this wonderful sickness! Steve actually sent me some mp3s of two banjos he has in current inventory and the Berkshire was just a killer - even through the tiny speakers in my computer. I did learn something interesting in talking to Steve about the Ron Block model. Steve has been setting the Block model banjos with 5/8 bridges and head tension at a G# now. No more 11/16 bridge or looser head tension. Ron has had his banjo set up by Steve this way and he's even moved towards a lighter string gauge. Steve said "Yeah, I need to change that on my website. I've been setting them up (Block models) that way for a while now." I measured the bridge on my new Block - sure enough - its a 5/8. There's very little I want to do to this banjo except hug it and then play it!
Happy pickin' all!
