I was checking tickets to see Steve Martin in D.C. on Oct. 12 and the lowest ticket price is $70. Wow. Not so sure about it now.

Sadly live performances by name performers are getting to be too expensive for me nowdays. Hard to know where to lay the blame.

I know what you mean, by going to the performances, we support those prices. I dont mind paying a fair price, and I dont feel they should play for peanuts, but I feel that is a little steep.

back in the days when I had hair, I remember going to see the Eagles / Jimmy Buffet performing on July 4, 1976. Tickets only cost $12 - $15

Festivals continue to be the best value going.

The cheapest ticket for his October show at the Ryman is $45 - ouch! I hope the Steep Canyon Rangers are getting a good piece of the action.

I'm guessing most of the blame can be laid at the feet of "Ticketmaster" who pretty much has a monopoly on live event ticketing.

I was excited he was coming to Denver but......

Cheapest Tickets are $35 for nosebleed upper deck plus $12 "convenience fee"

Decent seats are $75 plus $14 "convenience fee"

I'm not paying those kind of prices. I'll be checking Craigslist for some last minute deals the day before the concert. Maybe I'll get lucky.

I just don't understand these Convenience Fee's. I guess it's like the airlines charging you to check you bags. Just more fee's.

Gonna see him when he gets to Denver. Two tickets - $55 each. Not really happy with the price, but he's one of my favorite people, and a pretty darn good picker. I'm psyched to see him.

I saw Steve Martin's show last night at the Ryman. SO good! WELL worth the $65 I paid for the ticket.

If any of you are interested I wrote an account of the show. He DID make good use of the Steep Canyon Rangers, and, it being Nashville, he had Earl up on the encore. Always awesome to see Earl!

Here's my perspective. I'd rather spend $65 on Steve Martin in Nashville than to drive to the nearest casino (Evansville?) and lose that much in 15 minutes :).

My wife insisted that we go see SCR and Steve Martin when they come to Denver, and she bought us the pricey tickets in the orchestra pit. She said it something like this, "If we're going, we might as well be able to see!"

(I sure love my wife. She was just as supportive when I bought my OME, too!)

I was at the Atlanta show and it was great. The SCR did a great job and they were worth the price.

Ditto Charlotte.
Balcony seats $54, took my daughter and we had a blast. Rangers were great, Steve was relaxed and did a little comedy/humor between songs and tuning his 3 banjos. 3 encores to a SOLD OUT show...the last song? KING TUT! My daughter (26) asked me "what the heck was that?" Back when the music she was into was on Sesame Street...

I highly recommend the show...

Okay folks, try a £55 ticket price for his London show [thats £££ not $$$], to be honest though its probably gonna be worth it as we see so few bluegrassers here in the UK.

Aw, I wish we'd gotten to hear King Tut. But then again, I'll take Earl over King Tut any day!

I have tickets for the Denver show. The price made me hesitate for a moment, the I went ahead and bought them. My Sweetheart was the one that suggested we go, knowing how 'tight' I am with money. We too will be in the orchestra pit, row GG. Not to close, but not to far away either.

This is one of the few concerts I have gone to in years. However I attend Rockygrass every year!

I remember when a cup of coffe was 5 cents.... it's all realitive.... but we somehow remember the cheaper prices more on things we don't use everyday...

if he comes near my area, I'll go see him and have the memories for the rest of my life... 70 bucks? I can waste that at a restruant with my family

Two of the shows were cancelled in my area (PA/NJ) due to lack of ticket sales. Gotta be the prices that is the reason. Can't imagine lack of interest......sigh!

I think it's Barabara Streisands fault. They all figure if she can get 500 to 1500 dollars a ticket, well hey what's 70 or 80 a ticket.

Went to the DC show last night. The show was terrific, well worth the money. My summary: two shows in one - great comedy and great bluegrass, Steve was hilarius without really trying, excellent picker and C/H, and the SCR's were at the top of their game. Again, thanks to Steve for his being a special abassador for banjo & bluegrass music. Jim O

Also, the show ended with a B/G King Tut - a real treat. Go see it if you can.

Below is my aunt's report from DC. I am going to the Chicago show, but I'll probably have a slightly different view than she did, since I'll be in the very back row of the balcony.

I was happily seated in front row, absolutely center, with Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers within a few feet. Really enjoyed the concert--one hour and 45 minutes. First encore: Orange Blossom Special. Second encore: Bluegrass version of King Tut. Don't know if officially sold out but looked/felt sold out. Very responsive happy crowd.

The only guest was a female country singer from Nashville--don't remember her name. She and Woody Platt (SCR) sang Pretty Flowers. At the Nashville performance Dan Tyminski and Rhonda Vincent sang Pretty Flowers AND Earl Scruggs made an appearance! John McEuen opened the show in Nashville. I was hoping he would make an appearance in DC but....

It definitely was not a typical bluegrass crowd but the music was well received. I thought it was interesting that the song (other than encores) that by far received the greatest reaction was Steep Canyon Rangers a cappella version of "I can't Sit Down".

Here they are doing that song at Joe Val 2008.

That's my report for now. Very good; just the right amount of Steve's humor/banter and great music.

Ouch on the ticket prices... oh well. I guess I'll just have to go back to SCR by themselves when they play Cat's Cradle in Carrboro 11/21

Excellent show--was really impressed by SCR, as I hadn't seen them live before. The woman singing on "Pretty Flowers" with Woody was Shannon Whitworth. http://www.myspace.com/shannonwhitworth

I dropped some cash at the merch stand for The Crow tab, but I'm thinking it'll be a long while before I'm good enough to pick along...

I guess these won't really add much to what we have already read and discussed, but in case anyone is interested, here are a couple of reviews of Steve's DC show:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...1303020.html

(It's neat to see such a glowing review of banjo music - and a band like the SCR that wouldn't otherwise get covered - in the Post, athough there is the almost inevitable lack of detailed banjo music knowledge: In the bluegrass world, Martin is revered for his skill at a difficult five-finger technique known as "clawhammer." )

My wife and I went to the Denver show last night and I thought it was excellent. One of my favorite concerts, up there with Rush back in 1983. :-)
Pete Wernick played on a few numbers.

The Rangers were very impressive as well... what great voices! They did a 4 part vocal number (no instruments) that was outstanding.

Steve played extremely solidly, switching back and forth between his banjo tuned in double C, G, and open back for the clawhammer numbers. I think he needs new tuners on one of his banjos... he spent lots of time tuning.

And, of course, it's not every day you get to hear King Tut with a couple of banjo breaks!

Lachlan - Posted - 10/25/2009:  17:40:29

My wife and I were there, too. We both thought that Steve played exceptionally well. I just don't understand how some people can say that he's "just ok," or "he's alright." That guy can pick! And hammer, too. He might not be the best banjo player to ever play a break, but give him some credit. I've listened to his album a lot of times, and he tossed in a lot of improvised parts, albeit subtle, just like a "real" bluegrass banjo player. As for the Steep Canyon Rangers: wow! I liked them before, and now they're ranked in my top three favorite bluegrass bands. My only wish for the entire show was that it had been several hours longer...

I guess I better bring binoculars cause I am sitting in the cheap seats at the Morton Meyerson in Dallas tomorrow night ($40).

Just out of curiosity how much is the tour banjo, not that I will buy one.

What other cool T-shirts and what not are they hawking?

Such a deal! (Not)

I'm totally excited.

I went to the Denver show. Last minute decision. Went downtown and bought a ticket from one of the scalpers outside for a great price. Row Q Center Orchestra. I knew that the show would be good but was blown away by how much I really liked it. Steve was excellent.

Steve did seem to be tuning his banjo ALOT. He said he just put new strings on it right before the show. Maybe his Florentine has the original tuners on it. Original tuners are great from the Mojo standpoint but new tuners can't be beat for not slipping.

The fiddle player from Steep Canyon Rangers (Nicky Sanders) stole the show. WOW he could play.

If you have a chance to go to one of the remaining shows try and make it.

Bob

This is kind of last minute, but I am going to Dallas tonight (10/27) to see Steve Martin in concert with the Steep Canyon Rangers. The person I was supposed to go with cannot make it so I am trying to seel the other ticket. The face price is $100 which is what I am trying to get. It is 7th row center. As I am physically going there we could just exchange when we are there.

Just got back from the concerto. The cheap seats were jest fine. Seemed like on one number Steve played three fanger Bluegrass style then switched to clawhammer on a bluegrass banjo.

Steve played a few clawhammer tunes on "his first 45 year old" openback "banjo." Don't get me wrong his bluegrass stuff was great, but his clawhammer playing seemed effortless like he was more at home playing this style.

The fiddle player was excellent, but I am spoiled having seen Doug Kershaw play "Orange Blossum Special" at the olde Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin. Maybe it was the beer or the shapely gal I was with.

Sorry I wasn't able to reply, I was driving from OKC to Dallas. I just meant I would sell the ticket there rather than mail or whatever. Anyways, I was able to sell the ticket ast face value. Steve was a great player. You have to appreciate that "bluegras" King Tut

Saw the show last night, unbelievable.
The music was fantastic the funny stuff was, well, funny and I got to see Bela perform.
Steve's opening act was Abigail Washburn. She played clawhammer with back up on a fiddle
and a cello. Her voice is amazing, really enjoyed her. Anyway she is married to Bela so he came on and played
the second part of her show then he came back to play with Steve on "The Crow".

Although I stayed up past my bedtime, it was well worth it.

Back on topic, I saw Steve's show in Orange County last night and I was stunned by how well he played. Heard some Big Tony influence in there, and obviously he has been working his tailpiece off. The show is stupendous, and Steve Martin is not kidding around about his playing. My wife and I have both heard Steve play over the years, and were blown away by his performance. Excellent show, not to be missed. Haven't seen a show this good in a long time.
