Hi I just started oicking less than a month ago, but now I've found out that it's highly addictive! Am I crazy`?Will I end up in a withdrawal centre? Everything except music is almost out of question! My mother says, it's a meurosis, a friend calls it mania. Are you suffering from the same mental disorder?
Many greetings, freakydays

There are support groups for the affliction. In a lot of areas these support groups are known as 'Jam Sessions'.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step to healing.......I've admitted nothing!

Welcome to the addictive world of banjos!

Even though I'm a bit crazy, I'm feeling completely sane - isn't that normal? And I can tell you: I've found one of these remedies called jam session - but I hope I will not drive the other folks crazy because of my very limited beginner knowledge! $0 years of Woodstock - and no party!

There's only one known cure, box up everything banjo related and send it to me and I'll send you a certificate that you have graduated from the 12 step banjo recovery program.

Welcome aboard the crazy train, enjoy the ride.

Hi justryin! That's how I got cigarettes when I was a schoolgirl: Took them from people who stopped smoking - always the terribly strong filterless ones. But nevertheless I never became addicted to cigarettes! freakydays

David,

You are not addicted. You are actually just dependent. So long as you play the banjo there will be no problems, no overdose, no seizures or convulsions. Sure, your family will disown you and call you names like banjo junkie and banjo addict... but what do they know?

Stop... and who knows what the consequences might be...

HA! Actually, my family is quite supportive of my "addiction".

3 years ago, I bought a car (Subaru 4-door Sedan), even though I've kept my old pick-up truck (4-Wheel drive -- works like a "trooper' even through 3 feet of snow), and when I told my folks I had a new car (vs the truck), my Dad's first question to me was:

"That's a nice car, but - - - How many instruments will it hold??"

True story!

That is excellent. One of my favorite stories is of a guy who lived on one of the islands out in Casco Bay Maine. He won the Maine lottery pretty big and had a bluegrass band flown out to the island to play for the 1,000 or so souls living there. One of the musicians asked him why he hadn't bought himself a new truck. He replied that he did... this one was 10 years younger than the 20 year old one he used to own.

I love that story.

At least you're just involved in PLAYING the durn things.

My compulsion, as depicted in my photo files and my Littlebanjos website, is to cobble up banjos out of ANYTHING.
Salad bowls, cooking pots, whatever.

I prefer to refer to it as an OBSESSION not an ADDICTION or AFFLICTION. Welcome to the banjo pickers world.

People sit in front of the TV for hours each day entertaining themselves and hardly anyone thinks anything of it. You play banjo for an hour a night and all of a sudden everyone wants to call the men in white coats. Really I'm not bitter. I believe that it is the rest of the world that's crazy.

My banjo playing is the only thing keeping the men in white coats at bay, otherwise they would just barge right in and haul me off

Think of it this way: Playing the banjo and being KNOWN to play the banjo builds character. You will have to be gracious in the face of stupid jokes and constant demands to play "Dueling Banjos." So keep it up! And since this topic is clearly banjo-related, I'm moving it.

Hi all! My friends and visitors have "treated" me and I have spent two banjo-free days. We had really good discussions watched freaky movies ate icecream and talked about plans and projects. TV? Yes , there is such a thing in my living room, but I forgeot to own it until a friend aof mine discovered that hidden thing, coveredwith a sheet. He's a tv-addict and hasn't watched tv since a week! This gives hope!
The car-story is great. It would be difficult to carrry a piano... .
I know why I baught an old Volswagen Camper! MIne is big enough, but too expensive (insurance, taxes, fuel) so that I can't afford to use it at the moment.

There is no going back! Once you start you're done. You are now a addict!

After awhile , there will be a footnote when you are introduced to new people. "This is the girl I was telling you about. The one who plays the banjo." You will always be walking around the house with a banjo strapped around your neck, Just noodling, playing things you hear in your head. It will be apart of your identity...........an extension of your former sane self. I just enjoy the ride.

Hi! My environment is pretty strange: My best friends want me in their band even though I can only play one song, my family is afraid of losing the flat bevuase of me practicing during the wekend while visting them, poeple on the trains react differently: Afraid of bombs in a strange bag or fascinated: "Hey, what's in there ? May I have a look at THis THING?"

And now I have to work so hard that I'm happy to be able to practice 20 minutes per day! I can never sleep more than 6 hours!

I studied every evening for 4 months for my state masters license. By the time I took my test, I had become completely un-addicted to TV. I couldn't stand the idea of sitting down in front of that idiot box for hours every day after work. That's when I decided to start learning to pick the banjo. There's no question how I feel about my choice now.

And I#m definitely incurable! Instead of sleeping enough I've practiced for hours - I'm getting better , already playing different songs - not yet goog enough but I'm on the way!
