So, I have not been to a festival yet and have a 13 year old (almost) son who is a start-up guitar player. I'd like to make sure the first experience we have is a good one. For those who attend and camp out at festivals in the NC/Virginia area, which would you say has the best accommodations for tent camping (along with a good festival atmosphere)???

I have been to a ton of festivals over the years and IMO one of the best for camping and jamming is Little John's (formerly Bass Mountain) Music Festival in Snow Camp, NC. I went to their Memorial Day festival and it was great as usual. They have their fall festival coming up on Labor Day weekend (Sept 3, 4, 5). I can't go to this one but will be at next years Memorial Day gathering. I'm hoping our band will be on the festival lineup next May (we're working on it) but will be there regardless.

I haven't been to a lot of different festivals either, and I haven't camped at any of the ones I've been to, but from what I've seen it appears that the campground at the Denton FarmPark is very tent-friendly. There is plenty of shade (although the terrain isn't very flat), relatively clean bathhouses, and the festivals are in mid-May and late-September so the temps shouldn't be extremely hot. This is also a very well run and family-oriented festival, so I think it would be a good experience for both of you.

Are folks camped right on top of each other or is there some wiggle room?

Cherokee, NC @ Happy Holidays Campground (June and August festivals). They also have small cabins. Tent camping is in shade near the 'crick'. The water in the crick is so cold, beer almost freezes
Denton Farm Park, NC. Again, camping in the shade.

There's plenty of wiggle room. The sites aren't on top of each other at all. Darrell "Measure your wealth not by the things you have but by the things for which you would not take money."

Merlefest has a great camping atmosphere and the festival is top notch. The picking starts on Monday and goes through Sunday. It is one of the biggest in the country. There are several camping areas. Sewerfest is the campground at the city water treatment plant and has become a huge success on its on. It is hard to beat

Lil Johns is a great festival. Cherokee Happy Holiday Camp Ground Denton is also a nice place to camp. Behind the stage up on top of the hill is pretty flat for tent camping.

Hey LilJohn-
Thanks for keeping it going. The Memorial Day festival was the most fun I've had bluegrassin' in a long time! It's hard to beat a money back guarantee, but somehow I don't think you're going to have to give much back!
