Can I comment on other's posts? "The ability to fake something. TO make people think you are doing something when you aren't. "To me that is the sign of a poor banjo player- or maybe it's better to say an INTERMEDIATE player. It is probably our greatest trick. It is used by a lot. But if I'm playing with you , I can tell.
The other night I was playing with a "great player" and watching him play a hundred miles an hour I noticed he was pretty much doing forward rolls over the barred 5th and 7th for C and D. Once in a while throwing in the 7th.
You might fool some people but experienced musicians see exactly what you are doing. THat is the sign of an INTERMEDIATE banjo player in my book. You won;t catch Earl or Jd doing that.

Cottontop, I knew that was going to happen! lol I was just wondering who it was going to be. I never worried about the opinion of other musicians when I was faking it at a jam. I don't think they were too worried either. They were too busy trying to catch what licks I was using! You know, I don't recall Earl or JD ever being at one of my jams! LOL

any banjo player worth his/her salt should (at some point) rise to a level of playing that he/she stops copying everything from others and begins to develop his/her own licks, and variations on tunes, and generally develop his/her own style of playing unique to their self

Any banjo player worth his salt ought to be able to...

... play the tune as he hears it in his head (so others can hear it too)
... tune the banjo by ear
... play slowly when the situation calls for it

Not ever give up trying to play the best you can, no matter what people tell you that you should be doing on the banjo now.

Hey! Did you notice on the YouTube video of Sweet Georgia Brown the mandolin player NEVER used his 4th/pinky finger on any of his breaks? Hmmmmmm.

Know when not to play at all! Even though we all love banjo, its not appropriate on every song.

The LORD will save me, and we will sing with stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the temple of the LORD (Isaiah 38:20).
