After reading these, I'm feeling more like PEPPER than SALT. However, a list of goals and challenges has clearly been provided here (except for maybe making my banjo cool ) Good responses.

Back when Rome ruled the roost, they used to pay the Soldiers in salt, that's where the term "worth his salt" came from,so I heard.
I think being a good ambassador of the banjo and mentoring young players makes a picker worth his salt.

Wow, great post. I have a list (my wife says I'm too opinionate- but I THINK SHE'S WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!) (That was a joke by the way)
Any banjo player worth his salt should:
1.)make people smile
2.)turn his damn banjo off (as in CUT OUT) when quieter instruments are playing
3.)not play so much backup
4.)play fiddle tunes
5.)not boss the whole group around
6.)improvise, improvise, improvise
7.) play lonesome road blues 57 different ways
8.)break away from the scruggs version of scruggs tunes ( I am SICK of hearing dear old dixie played exactly like scruggs)
9.)be semi-competent in D (noone, even Earl and JD is completely competant in D!!)
10.)know when to completely TURN THE BANJO OFF and let other people play and shine (why do banjo players have such a hard time with this one??????)

bones - Posted - 07/14/2009:  08:19:24

i think so too. --also be able to play in more than one style-- and play more than one genre of tunes.

To control his or her volume so that other members of the band or jam can be heard. Be willing to play rhythm softly when the vocalist sings or someone is taking a break, particularly the guitar which has a lot less volume than the banjo.

[Quote]"convince sceptical young rock guitarists that the banjo is COOL !"[Quote]

I used to be a young rock guitarist, I converted to banjo. In fact I recently sold my much loved Gibson Les Paul and Marshall stack to buy my new Huber.

I often find that my old rock band friends and aquaintances are blown away when they see Scruggs style banjo.

[Quote]"break away from the scruggs version of scruggs tunes ( I am SICK of hearing dear old dixie played exactly like scruggs)"[Quote]

I find this to be quite perplexing? It's a common thing I have noticed with time served bluegrassers. To help explain what I mean, cast your mind back to when you first heard bluegrass, what was it that attracted you to the music? I dare say that it was what are now known as the "old standards" the Scruggs tunes and songs etc done in Scruggs style.
My observations are, that it is the Scruggs style that still draws young people to the music today; just as it did right through from it's first conception.

Time served bluegrassers are sick of hearing and playing the stuff that gives our music it's attractiveness to the uninitiated and as such it never gets played, immediately putting a cap on new and young bluegrass fans, I suppose adding weight to the argument that banjo is not cool?

I do not mean to cause any controversy or to cause offence just thought I'd share my thoughts.

I think any banjo player worth his salt should:
1. Place timing at the front of his/her list of priorities ALWAYS
2. Complement the other musicians as best as possible.
3. Endevour to entice others to the wonderfull music we play.

I liked Goeff's reply, be able to play in an ensemble quitely enough to hear the softest instrument or vocal. It is all important.

Great post. I agree with everyone. I would disagree with saying you should play quietly while the guitar is playing. When the guitar is soloing you should TURN OFF YOUR BANJO.

it is isn't it. nicely put. when i was a young hot dog i thought the banjo was THE lead instrument. as i grew older (wiser-mmmm nah) i finally learned that the banjo is a backup instrument.
