After I dried my tears, I may take up a modest cocaine habit.

Well, after 46 years of picking Banjo,it's 'almost ' happened. I began playing Mandolin 3 1/2 years back & it's become so addictive, that i've hardly played Banjo at all. I do feel as though i'm slowly 'letting go' of Banjo, but i also know that i will never 'really' let it slide.I've thought of selling it,but again,i know i'd want it back 5 minutes later. All i need is the incentive to play it again, but it's hard. I still love the instrument, but the sense of having 'been there, done it,read the book, seen the film, bought the Tee-shirt' is all too strong, when i have so much to learn on Mandolin - really sad,

I was faced with this exact issue several years ago. I had a serious motorcycle accident, not my fault, where one of the bones in my left forearm was completely snapped near the wrist, like a candy cane. The Dr had to open up the top of my forearm and, using a steel plate and screws, put it back together. There was unavoidable muscle and nerve damage from the surgery, which I knew going in. We were more interested in gaining basic hand functions, not so much playing music again. I had 1 1/2 years of physical therapy, but ended up with a 45% permanent partial disability in my left hand. I bought a dobro, but I started my "musical rehab" too soon and got discouraged, and sold the dobro. I wasn't sure if I would ever play a musical instrument again, and that was a MAJOR BUMMER. After getting through my pity party, I slowly started practicing playing the banjo and guitar. The pain would bring tears to my eyes, but I perservered, and slowly improved. The physical rehab playing offered me also offered me a psychological rehab, letting me know that if I want something bad enough, and I'm willing to work within my limitations, I WILL get better....and so I did. I'll never get back to my dexterity I had before my accident, but I love playing banjos and guitars and isn't that the most important thing? Next to my family, playing music with my friends is the most important thing in my life, and having gone through the trials and tribulations of my accident and recovery, will never take for granted the gift of good health or the knowledge that in a blink of an eye, it can all change.

While I would be very disappointed if I couldn't play the banjo anyone, it wouldn't be the "end of the world" for me. There's much more to life than simply playing the banjo. I'd get over it. Maybe I'd write another book or two.

Oh Lord! I stopped playing tennis so I would not chance screwing up my fingers, for my banjo playing.

I would be an angrier guy without a banjo - my blood pressure would go up - I would not be composing songs, You would not want to cross my path in a dark alley.

No banjo? Perish the thought.

Howard
