Hey all!! Would it be alright to tab out sometimes what Murphy teaches? Sometimes I have a hard time remembering! I don't see anything wrong with it!

it is suppose to be frowned upon....but it sure beats hitting the rewind button 1000 times.

Boy, I don't know. I think that might be as serious as removing the "Do Not Remove Under Penalty Of Law" tag on new furniture.

On a more serious note, I would think that the process of tabing it out would probably commit it to memory for you.

There is the copyright laws to deal with so I wouldn't post the tab without permission. Other then that, I don't see any harm with using any tool you can to learn.

Dear stanleyfan01,

I know a lot of really smart people advise tabbing out Murphy's stuff to avoid rewinding the DVD which can be a pain, I think the reason she is against that is that the idea is to train your ear by hearing the music a few hundred times and trying to copy it. If you shortcut that by simply reading the tab you lose that experience. I don't think the object is just to learn one particular song but to learn a process. You could e-mail her if you want to ask the source.

Do what works best for you.

I used to write down the words to songs longhand and keep them in a notebook. Then I re-typed them all into a computer. When lyrics started getting posted on the web, I'd cut&paste them into my book but would have the hardest time memorizing the words. When I went back to typing them into my book, I rarely forgot the words.

The act of writing the tab may help you remember and learn the stuff you're supposed to play. It might even help you in analyzing it.

There is no difference at all between Murphy and reading tab that will affect future learning or jamming abilities. You are still memorizing and copying. Whatever makes it the easiest for you to advance to where you can begin _playing_ a few songs is how to start. The worry about not being able to jam or improvise because of the way you learn is garbage. There are many Murphy Method players who cannot jam. Almost every pianist learns by sheet music (which is basically piano tab) and some 'learn' to improvise whereas others never do. They don't take the next step, but everyone has to take the first steps of learning how to do it right and the easiest way to do so depends on the person, not on a philosophy.

Oh man..... you crossed the line when you put Murphy Method + Tab in the same phrase - probably a contract being put on you as we speak

When I had trouble remembering something from the Murphy videos I would write out reminders by name, but not the tab. The names would be what Murphy calls the various sections of the song. For example, to remember FMB I would write: FMB Roll -> 4 fill notes -> Em Slide & Lick ->.... This helped me at the beginning remember how to put a new song together. Still had to remember the details of each section, but for me this helped a lot.

If somebody could tab out the 17th fret break from Murphy's Foggy Mountain Special DVD, i'd be eternally greatfull - just can't get the hang of it..:)

IMO, the Murphy Method is one of many effective approaches to learning songs. The bottom line is to learn to play the songs. Whether one learns to play songs by her method, in todo, or combines it (sometimes)with "positive reinforcement," by tabbing parts of the songs, does it truly matter in the end? Absent the occasional "PR," one might get discouraged and abandon the DVD or possibly quit all together. Do what is the right for you. IMO, in time, you won't need to tab Murphy Henry's songs. Hang in there.
