I recently heard a beautiful and melancholic song played in C. It was played on an acoustic guitar tuned ( I believe ) to double C: CGCGCD from 6 to 1. What made it really nice was that the guy played the root chord in Csus2. Sounds weird, I suppose, but it really added to the flavor of the song. I tried it in straight I-IV-V, using standard tuning, and it just doesn't have the same feel.

Has anyone else heard of using root sus2 in place of the root chord?

if you mean C with NO 3rd and an added 2 .... yes .. it's very common ..
I like the sound as well ...
On 5 string it is very easy to accomplish this sound ....
Avoid 3rds ... and IF you use a 3rd, then put in a low part of the stack .. hopefully on the 4th string.

It is a less "happy" sound, but NOT minor .... lots of pop music ... country, modern pop jazz, new age, etc ... use this sound ...

groups like the Police made a career out of chords with no 3rds and an added 2nd ... even, for instance, Em9 ... an Eminor chord with a 2(9) right next to the minor 3rd for dissonance.
