For you folks who have gone from no nail or short nail to a pick or acrylic nail...

How did it affect the sound of your banjo? I 'm a nail biter and after 35 yrs of playing with just a tiny amount of nail and the flesh of my finger, I've become accustomed to that sound. Today, thanks to this discussion and the advice of a friend, I got acrylics on my index and middle fingers. With the nails the banjo sounds much brighter and the clicking of the nails on the strings is really annoying. Is there a breaking in period? Does my ear have to get re acclimated to the new sound? Different techniques? A new banjo maybe?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Michael.

..."the clicking of the nails on the strings is really annoying."

Michael, that's a sign you haven't yet found a proper solution for yourself.

just to add another option: Kyle Creed famously wore a pick, which I think was brass. There are some pictures of his creations on the back of the "Kyle's Back Porch" cd.
