Hi Everyone

If you had the opportunity to nominate a Banjo Teacher who helped you the most in 2008 who would you nominate.

For me it would have to be without any shadow of doubt - Murphy Henry.

Ross Nickerson. He has a great website and is always willing to help. His tabs are easy to learn and then you can add the embelishments on your own. Email him with a question and zing, in no time you have an answer. If I have a quick question, I can call Randall Wyatt right up the road and he always helps as well.

Since I don't have or know any other teachers, it would have to be my teacher, Eddie Collins.

That's a tough one. I'm not a fan of the Murphy Method, but that's just my personal preference and for those that find it helpful, I think it's great. I tried a couple of online teachers that didn't help much, as they just used cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all lessons that I did not find helpful in the least. Ross Nickerson has some really great material, and like Joe said, will gladly answer questions and try to help all he can. I would have to go with John Boulding (banjophobic on the Hangout) though. I've taken online lessons with John, and think he is a fantastic teacher. Wish I lived close enough to take them in person, as I think they would be even better.

I guess that Pete Wernick would be the one person who has exerted the greatest influence on my learning journey. He has been with me since I got his first tape version of "Bluegrass Banjo" (in fact I still have the book although the tape has long since passed on).

I had Eric Gibson of the Gibson Bros. for a intm. banjo class at the Augusta Heritage Festival [ D&E Elkins, WV] this summer. It was his first class as a teacher- ever.. BUT, can i nominate him for ROOKIE OF THE YEAR?

Trewq36 - Posted - 09/03/2008:  11:46:34

I vote for Chris Quinn who on the Hang Out is Chris Quinn, Hmmmm

Not a cookie cutter type, very personalized and versitile, in his approach. Only the summers get messed up because of all the festivals he goes to.

Never play the same thing once......yoR

Wayne Shrubsall, very laid back teaches Clawhammer,3-finger,Dobro etc... always personalized and echo Trewg36 comment on Summers .Plays with several different Bands and once played with Bill Monroe. Recommend one of his CD's (Old Friends) with Alan Munde.

Without a question, Dick Brown is the best instructor around. Not only do I vote for Dick because he is my instructor and he has taught me so much but I vote for him based on all the accolades he has garnered on the Hangout.
Dick, you certainly have my vote.

1-Bill Evans-most thorough-has given me enough to work on for the next year.
2-toss-up: Nick Hornbuckle and Dick Brown-Nick opened up the fretboard for me in a way no other teacher has. Without Dick I still wouldn't be playing in time.

Shouldnt it be categorized into "Female Banjo Teacher of the Year"

and "Male Banjo Teacher of the Year" ?

Without a doubt, it would be Roger Sprung. If you want to learn to play the bluegrass banjo by ear, Roger unquestionably is the man. And when I say "by ear," I don't mean following along with how someone else is playing. I mean taking the tune in your head and moving it to your fingers, so you can play it bluegrass-style on the banjo.

Roger is in Newtown, CT. Give him a call at 203-426-5243.

There are a lot of great teachers giving advice here at BHO that I've learned from this past year. I noticed Richard Dress helping out a lot...and he posted a nice lesson plan a few weeks back. I've enjoyed getting his perspective.

And, I just checked the member profile to make sure I was crediting the right guy...and note he is a fellow Hoosier...from my neck of the woods....so he gets my vote....but ALL the great teachers here at BHO are VERY MUCH appreciated by all us rookies...THANKS!

regards, bud

My vote goes to JohnBoulding. I started taking lessons from John in December 2007. I have had some health problems and had to stop in the middle of August, but I am going to go b ack to the lessons just as soon as I get my health problems straight. John is very patient and he has really helped me a lot. He is a wonderful teacher.
I have also used the Murphy Henry DVD's and have learned several songs from her, but John is my online buddy when it comes to lessons.

Someone told me that I had been named on this thread. Wow, thanks for mentioning me here-I appreciate the kind words! Its my privilege to be able to share music with folks and I have to say I enjoy the lessons as much or more than my students-cause they know I like to have fun and cut up. Thanks for allowing me to be of help-.
There are many great teachers out and about on the H.O and members are fortunate to have acess to them thru the web. The advent of online lessons is also one of the best things to happen to teaching since the invention of ' lessons', IMO. If you are in an area with no teacher that you can visit in person, try online lessons from any of the qualified teachers online these days-its the next best thing to live in person and way cheaper than driving hours.

Hands down my vote would go to Bob Altschuler from Delmar, NY. "Banjo Bob" has introduced a countless number of people to the joys of playing banjo. He is a kind, patient and encouraging instructor who makes each student really believe they can and will play the banjo. Bob has taught at Banjo Camp North and other camps for many years and actually is included in a new book soon to be released on the banjo camp experience. Bob has written for and been published in Mel Bay, Banjo Newsletter and AccuTab. You can catch his new article on John Hardy and the origin of the tune at the Silver Strings site. At IBMA this week, we met up with at least three of Bob's former students who are now picking with major bluegrass acts. That's quite a testament to his positive impact on every student he has had.

Well guys I guess we would nominate our own teachers cause thats who we know best but I can say without any doubt that Chad Light from Kingsport Tennessee is the best he takes the time to help each of his students with anything they need his Tab is so easy to understand and he makes CD's for his students to take home and learn from there home. I would nominate Chad Light Great Teacher and a Great Friend........

I was getting ready to nominate you myself, i guess somebody beat me to it. Morning and lunch spent listening to Wally and you in the chats have helped me a lot. Two guys who are always willing to help and the lick of the week videos are awesome. Most are beyond my banjo knowledge but they keep me thinking and experimenting!

I have already voted for John but I Amen what Banjerman, Possom, and Tam Zeb said about John. He is truely a gentleman and a scholar and so much fun to cut up with. Personality plus, and so very willing to help you get to the level of playing the banjo that you desire. Although his LOTW is above my head, I look forward to it, and enjoy trying. Thanks again John.
