Man, you guys sure are a gabby group! Hope you're all doing well - including the Chief. I saw some pictures of him a couple months back and he looked like he must be wearing out a Stairmaster or something - he's going to have to have all his clothes shrunk to fit him. Good stuff. Regards. Todd

I must be doing something wrong. I saw David Dogwood at the Jack Hatfield banjo camp and told him I had been trying to get in touch with him for months and he said nothing was wrong, to try again. I did and it came back that the email address had changed. Some of you have said that you have been in contact with him recently. Will you PLEASE tell me how and what you are using for an address.

Folks, today I am still a bit bleary eyed and I hate work more than ever.
Yesterday I met up with Sonny and obtained my new maple Chief .
My buddies and I had a practice last night so I had a chance to break it in a little.
In the middle of songs we were practicing for a performance I stopped and muttered something like " I have never heard those tones before..."
I am completely overwhelmed by the tone and full range of sound.I have tried out some Chiefs and I aint saying this one is special , BUT it is .
Sonny , I dont know what magic you and Frank worked on # 35 but don't let out the secret .
Plus, this banjo is just flat gorgeous .The resonator looks more like a tiger's eye ring than maple.
If I didnt love the sound so much I'd put this in a glass case , rotating , bathed in spotlights.
Maybe I should get another more plan looking one, Sonny. Maybe ,Sonny's Ugly Chiefs to go with the Ugly Tuners?
Cannot thank you enough Sonny .
What a great day !

Steve, one great thing about these banjos is that you'll never lose that feeling of amazement. My Chiefs are *still* the best banjos I've ever owned and continue to give pleasure on a daily basis. No other banjo has come close to their longevity when it comes to "Dang, this thing sounds good!".

Hey, Sonny!

Jeff.
Good to hear from you again. You doing OK? Still banjerin' I presume.
Yeah, Steve was completely "taken" when he opened the Price case.
That's what I like most about what I do right now. The look on their face when they see it first. (Priceless)
And then to have someone say good things about The Chief is mighty, mighty pleasing!!!!

I've been having some contact with Aaron McDarris lately. Certainly a fine
young man. For those who don't know..Aaron plays the banjo with The Grascals.
He's one fine player too. Fast and clean. He has a good understanding of the instrument
which impresses me as much as his playing.

See you. Tell Ruth hello.

Sonny,
We were at a great pickin' party over memorial weekend and my wife, Robbin had a ball learning your signature ending to "Rocky Top". Donnie Sojka, Ron Trotta and Robbin were having a ball going through a bunch of your songs...let me tell you, when she sings "Tennessee Hound Dog", she fits in a howl that should have been in there from the start! She's signed up for NashCamp in October...make sure some DNA rubs of on her banjo pickin'!

Diva...I was told by someone who was there and counting, that they played Rocky Top 48 times at a University of Tennessee Football game. Same as basketball I guess. We played the halftime show in 1986 for the homecoming game with Alabama. We, standing in the center of the football field with that 187 piece band all over the rest of it, and 105 thousand people singing Rocky Top. Now, that's awesome...
Spike is the most distant person from any sport that you've ever seen...She wouldn't know a baseball basket from a football bat!!!

Kerry...Don (El Dobro) is a good, old friend. He knows...I'm not sure there is such a thing as "banjo DNA" but I promise you she will know more when she leaves than when she arrived. We have a full staff of great teachers.

Steve...I'm elated...If I didn't know better, I would think you really like old number 35. (That was my number when I played football in my one year of high school)

Chief, I was in the band at the University of South Carolina. I well remember the days of traveling to Neyland stadium and listening to those fans belt out Rocky Top. I begrudgingly admit that not only is it impressive, it also is probably the greatest tradition in college football.

Having said that, my family will disown me if they ever hear me play it on the banjo.

P.S. I hope you and Big Bro are getting royalties for every time those fans sing it!!
P.S.S. Yes, I am working on Spike's southern education. If you want to help me out you could go ahead and expose her to her first rattlesnake if you like.

Diva (Reid)..We were so honored when Rocky became the official Tennessee fight song, and then to have it become a Tennessee State song was too much for uneducated hillbillies to fathom...my career has been one priceless experience after another....grateful is just a word, but...
Royalties you say Whattsat
Someone figured out, (somehow) that since it was released Christmas day, 1967..that we had played and sung Rocky Top approximately 10, 000 times. That's a whole lotta pickin' as Lester Flatt would have said.

Hey I checked out your pictures, and banjo...they're good, but wouldn't you look so much happier if you were playing a Chief???? Huh

One of the quieter Chief owners popping up to say 'hey' on the new thread.

I was playing on the back porch last weekend (for my greatest fan, my 88-yo mother-in-law) and I was just taken by the beauty of MP6E. It was practically glowing in the full sunlight and that gorgeous woodgrain blows me away every time.

Now if I could just learn to actually play the durned thing...maybe a trip to NashCamp would help...

Chief, if you think that YOU are honored and grateful, just imagine what your fans out here must feel!! If it wasn't for you, Earl, JD, Tony and company, we'd all be sitting around looking at each other to see who is going to take the next break on Cripple Creek -- it would be the only song any of us would know.

I had the opportunity to play a Chief but it was under less than ideal circumstances. They had one at Gruhn's, and they were very crowded that day. I had to wait for a practice room, and then I was playing it knowing that there was a line of people outside the door waiting for me to hurry up. And more importantly, the only song I could play from memory then was Bile Dem Cabbage. So I thought it sounded great, but I would really love the opportunity to play one NOW that I have a little more experience under my belt and a better ear. I'm also looking forward to trying out the Scout.

Oh, and yes I should own a Chief. But not any Chief. I should own THIS Chief:

"Greg Rich engraved, Bean Blossom neck, walnut Chief #1"

Especially seein' as how it never gets taken out of the case by it's current "afraid to learn how to pick" owner....

Steve,
I think your playing will elevate to another level, not that it needs to mind you, but you will start hearing things you haven't heard before pertaining to tunes you already knew--they will just seem "punchier" notes clearer, etc.. it's a great day when you can wrap your hands around the neck of a chief... banjo that is.. happy for you as I have stated on email... keepa pickin'

Heap Big Chief,

Speaking in reference to Rocky Top and not with forked tongue either -- got that version set as my cell phone ring with your banjer coming in loud and clear -- can you guess where I"m from.. MP10E is still just ear boggling!! It looks, plays and sounds better than I am worthy of playing...

See you at NashCamp and talk over sweet tea or something since neither of us can partake of the peacepipe

Dang Steve, I just spent a week in Cinncy back in March and was lamenting the fact that I couldn't find anything bluegrass related in town.

Hope that river isn't giving you too much trouble these days. Stay dry. If you want to send that Chief up here to the mountains for a while, I'll be happy to keep it safe for you.

Diva,
Our river is well within its banks. It is so sad seeing the flooding off the Mississippi.
I can point you to some bluegrass , what there is of it ,next time you come back .
I cannot ship the Chief , sadly.
Its against the law in Kentucky to deliberately and intentionally mail or ship or otherwise cause to be transported a banjo from one of our favorite "favorite sons" across state lines .
This is the Bluegrass State , you know.
The punishment if caught is two years straight of Bootsy Collins music ( one of Ohio's favorite "favorite sons)

How could they allow # 35 to leave the state when they prosectute people who rip off our rocks?
That would be such an embarrassment .

PS. I won't ,however, be ordering those Ugly Tuners.
