Don't know if anyone else here likes to run for fitness and health while listening to your ipod--but I have just started an easy walking/running routine and have put a few of my moderately paced banjo tunes in a sport imix for anyone who likes to run and listen to some upbeat banjo music at the same time. If you are a big time competitive runner and run to rap and funk--this won't be for you. Probably Lance Armstrong and Venus Williams won't be rushing to download this. But if you are just running around the neighborhood and like clawhammer banjo music--take a listen .
Tired of running to rap and hip hop? How about some moderately paced acoustic banjo music for your run? Envigorating and positive imix to make you feel good all over while you run. Run home down Green Forest Lane to some fine instrumental tunes on old time banjo .

Mary, the link is not working. Please double check that, ok?
However, I did just return from my 5.5 mile walk all over ABQ - and I listened to the Mills Brothers the entire time! Great music and no banjo, but lots of kazoo. I've been walking to music for many years. I prefer that to walking with a partner, although I've been known to walk, talk and listen simultaneously....we'll do that in a few weeks, I hope.

I've tried listening to bluegrass while running, but it's not for me. I like to listen to my footsteps and breathing. For me, that's part of what running is all about. I ran the Stockholm Marathon yesterday and was amazed that some people chose not to hear that magic sound produced by 18500 pairs of running shoes!

When I'm walking (I'm not a jogger) on my treadmill, I use the time to memorize lyrics (my songbook perched in front of me). It's a great way of multi-tasking - otherwise memorizing is so difficult for me.
As for listening - sounds like the kind of music I love to have while driving. Thanks.

I tried jogging while listening to polka music but kept going in 3/4 km circles.
Actually before my knees went to Hell in a hand basket, I had a mix tape (this was before iPods) with mostly Rolling Stones.

Like Timmo, my knees are shot. Therefore, I swim to stay in semi-shape. Know of any waterproof listening devises? A half hour of slow breast stroke gets boring after a while.

I'm curious: was it an actual kazoo, or was one of the (amazing) Mills Brothers doing it vocally? Robin

I only have banjo/bluegrass on my IPOD when I run..lots of Tony T and Flecktones. It always keeps me inspired.... these days,it seems to be the only type of music I like.I always wondered what everyone else is listening to when they run.

I believe the Mills Brothers used a comb with tissue paper. The only true instrument they used was a guitar - all the other sounds were done vocally. Also--are any of you runners or walkers using the NIke sports training kit? I recently bought a pair of Nike Shox running shoes (to cushion my new adventrue) and lo and behold--they came with a pocket under the footbed for a sensor and a brochure explaining how if I ordered the sensor and wireless connector (only 29 bucks) to my ipod nano--I would be able to track my progess.
Well, I did and it is really cool. You can run and listen to music, then press a button on your ipod and a voice comes on and tells you how long you've been running, how far, what pace--and if you sink in your weight--how many calories you've burned. It is pretty fun and incites me to speed up a little or go a little longer.
When you get home, you can load your run from itunes to the Nike page and they keet a graph and records of all your runs so you can see your progress. Also--everytime I do anything better (like run two extra minutes or a little further--Lance Armstrong comes on and praises me with atta girls. I'm sure they must have had this available for sports teams for awhile, but I think its really nice and helpful for them to make it available to the average person for his/her own personal training and enjoyment. Best wishes, Mary Z. Cox ps. Judy, I'll have it with me on my trip out west and I'll let you listen. I'm going to try and run a mile every evening after we stop on our trip to Pasadena.

I use a Garmin Forerunner 305 watch. It keeps track of the pace, time, route, etc. When finished working out, you can plug the device into the computer and it will show a map of the route, the pace per each part of the workout, and if you buy the heart monitor, it will track the heart rate too. I'll show it to you when you visit, Mary, but I really like this little gadget. It was not cheap, but like everything else except fuel, since I've bought it, the price has decreased. +_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_ Don''t Miss The Mary Z. Mary's link now works. Give it a try.
I have a 8 gig Sansa player - it is flash memory, and opposed to havng the little hard drive that my 40 gig Ipod has, it is not temperamental. It doesn't skip, slow down or fail on start! I highly recommend this little player. It has a built in FM radio and also a built in recorder.
However, when I am out walking, I don't like to listen to just banjo music or to one musician. I usually listen to a variety of music including some fabulous early 1900 songs. I learn the words as I walk and I can put the tune on "repeat" so I can hear it multiple times. Good for the mind, spirit and body.
Of course, when I return from walking, I want to play the banjo, but I can sing while walking and cannot play the banjo while standing (let alone walking).

Ah, thanks. I used to try to play comb and tissue and was unsuccessful until I saw Jim Kweskin do it - he used a finetooth comb and wax, not tissue, paper. Works great. In fact, just like jug and washtub and other such stuff, I would definitely accord it genuine instrument status in the hands of a great player.
Of course the Mills Brothers were great players of instruments without instruments!

The TVS are tuned to the food channel because it beats watching the Discovery Health Channel where you can see Mrs. Dugger give birth to her 17th kid - like the whole world wants to watch her have her 17th baby.
