Greetings all.

We have finally convinced Crowe to come on down and shoot a DVD with AcuTab, and I am completing the outline now. I have a pretty clear idea what should be included, but thought I would throw it out to everyone here as well.

What songs/tunes would you like to see him cover?

How about concepts, questions, etc?

Maybe I can ask it this way: if Crowe was going to make a video for you, what would you ask him to include?

We are very excited about this project, and can't wait to get started.

Thanks for any input anyone may wish to offer.

If you would like to be notified when the DVD is available, go here: http://www.acutab.com/sidebar/comin...ng_soon.html

Great project. How about a bits-and-pieces section where he shows some backup licks, tags, and some of those bluesy fills?

Hey John:
East Virginia Blues is my favorite. Also, would like some instruction on his right hand picking attack angle and technique. Great idea for a DVD!! Thanks for putting this together!

bluegrassboy - Posted - 02/25/2008:  19:16:30

i have a live recording of him playing"faded love" that would be great, also, when wendy miller was with him, they done a mandolin number called "blue dreamer", classic crowe break!

shclandler - Posted - 02/25/2008:  19:23:24

His setup and right hand technique would be great. How he constructs a solo a la the the Ron Stewart video would be helpful too.

RayD - Posted - 02/25/2008:  19:33:53

His approach to backup - how he chooses phrasing, transition licks between chords, turn arounds, how he comes up with intros, to name a few.

Cheers,

RayD

I forgot, definitely backup! I'd love to see that.

Oh man -- JD Crowe.

John, that's outstanding.

I'm with RayD -- back-up. Not just showing licks, but as RayD says, his approach, what he's thinking about, what he's trying to do in various musical situations. With a singer, with a mandolin, with a fiddle, during verses and fill-ins. This is what you can't get from just tabbing the notes and showing the fingerings.

For advanced players, the concentration should be on backup and his unique arrangements on slower tunes such as "Faded Love." It would be wonderful to watch him play the slower stuff and hear his philosophy on these tunes.

John I would like for you to get him to do two if at all possible and one just strictly backup I think a backup of Crowe would out sell one of lead playing on instrumentals of course I am going to buy whatever he does but would buy the backup as a first choice if there was one. I have Sonnys's and I have one more request for you to get Bill Emerson to do one for Accutab if you can get that worked out with him while he is still playing. Let us know as soon as it is out I want to be one of the first in line for one.

Thank you Joel Sweeney.

I'd like to get his comments on "drive" and how he gets that solid drive in any song. Get him to tell what his philosophy is in playing behind vocals. He;s the best at it. Also, "Old Home Place" would be a good song to include.

Definitely back up technique examples, advice for improvising back up on the fly.
Thanks.

Yeah, waste time on set-up. J.D. played a Gold Star and it sounded fine. Focus on playing. Collectors can talk about banjos that J.D. owned. Make this DVD for players!! Waste not a second of J.D.'s time on strings or tone rings. Second for second......focus on all aspects playing!!!

"J.D. What tone ring should people have in order to sound like you?" Don't insult the man.

JD Crowe is a master in slow country tunes back-up. I don't know many instructional material who explains that great slow country tunes on banjo. So I hope there will be some of those tune on the future dvd. But I will buy this dvd anyway.

John,

Put up a pre-order page, you can have my money for this now.

Seriously, you can.

I agree with Chris Quinn. JD is a master of arranging breaks and dreaming up creative and interesting backup -- and then executing them flawlessly on stage. Have him talk about arranging a tune. What he considers while working out backup for a tune. How he prepares himself for a show.

As for songs? Any that have been mentioned would be great. I would add Age to the list so far.

Thanks

Tyler

John, If the DVD could be layed out very much in line with the way Bill Evans did all of his Instructional video's, you will have winner of a DVD I think. I like the song to be played in a band context and then break it down as far as breaks and back-up. I really wouldn't care what songs are performed as long as the instuctions show us J.D.'s right and left hand magic.

I wanted to buy the book, but I see it's out of stock. Will this be reprinted? I'm not sure how much I'll get out of a DVD without tab.

ambpicker - Posted - 02/26/2008:  14:26:03

I still have the book, it's in a safe place. I'd like to see him play beartracks. On his black jack album, he played a break on a song about a blind helpless child. It really went with the song, and was one of the finest breaks ever taken on banjo, IMHO.
I've never met, seen, or even heard JD's voice. But I'm a big fan.

Some of the slow breaks and the backup licks from the Kentucky Mountain Boys years. Also I would like to know how Crowe sets up his banjos now and how he set them up back in the 70's with the '75 band.

Thanks,

JD is the master of country banjo, period. Maybe he has something to say about the broader application of the banjo in country or gospel music, etc.

Whatever you include, shoot it from the perspective of the player, looking down at the fret board (like the Jim Mills DVD). That is the absolute best view IMHO. There is no transposing mirrored positions in your brain because you are duplicating it just as you would see it.

silvioferretti - Posted - 02/26/2008:  16:44:19

One thing that I don't thing has ever been covered are those bluesy licks (mostly out of an F position) that he employs in a variety of tunes, from slow stuff to slow-medium songs like Ramblin' Boy all the way to the opposite end of the spectrum like on Train 45. Know what I'm talking about? A 5-3 pull-off on the 1st string then down on the 2nd string, 3rd fret, a choke on the 3rd string, 5th fret etc. Very, very bluesy stuff that I believe he took from electric guitar players and turned into "classic Crowe". Man, I never figured out what he does, let alone HOW!...

"There'll Be No Blind Ones There". One of my favorites.
I agree that some discussion of his setup over the years would be interesting since his recorded tone has changed greatly over the years from Jimmy Martin to the Ketucky Mt. Boys to now, and I don't think it's all attributable to changing recording technology.

silvio, i think the lick your refering to is on the live in japan album with keith whitley at the end of "dont give your heart to a rambler" im not 100% sure, but i think he got that from van halen, ive worked on that for years, (still dont have it right) if you run into greg cahill, he can do it!
